What Makes You Happy?

Postby Casper » Sun May 20, 2012 1:24 am

Just what it says. What makes you happy? And why?

Here's why I want to know: enough of us are bummed out constantly, over one thing or another. It's just the way our lives go. So I figure, if we can put together kind of a database of happy things and why they make people happy, then when someone's feeling down, they can always look through the list and say "hey, that helped so-and-so through something like this; maybe I'll give it a try, too!" At the least, it'll remind us that we do have some happy moments in our lives! :D

Here are three that I can think of, off the top of my head:

Riding Motorcycle
It feels like running away from the world. Nobody can talk to me, but they all know I'm there. It's a different world for me. I ride a little faster and harder, throw caution to the wind a little more, and take one more step away of normal society. I may want to be accepted by (some of) them, but I don't want to be one of them.

Photography
I've only recently started doing anything serious, but I'm already loving it. It's a chance to capture moments that just make me say "wow." Some are funny, some are unique, but all of them (the ones I keep, anyway) say something. It's almost like getting to create beauty, even though you're really just capturing it. It makes me feel like I'm a part of the world without having to actively interact with it.

Helping Here
Yeah, seriously. Especially since becoming a mod, I've done things that I NEVER, in my wildest dreams, expected to be doing. It's scary, but it's exhilarating at the same time. More importantly, when someone is going through a crisis and I can help bring them back from the edge, it gives me that sense that I've done some good to someone in the world, that I'm not as useless and unneeded as I often believe I am. Ask Ali; she knows all about my craving for feedback. So yeah, being on here and helping people, even when I'm going through my own things, makes me feel better.

So those are mine. What's yours?

And once again... you're a rocking kickass mod, Johnny :) Thanks for the positive thread :)

My happy things:

1) I have the sweetest, purringest, cat ever. He falls asleep with me every night with his paw draped over my hand, he greets me when I come home every day and talks to me at the door, he follows me around from room to room, as loyal as a dog, he's amazingly healthy for 12 years old, when I cry, he gets a concerned look on his face and even touches me with his paw to check on me, and when I have a hot date, he leaves the bedroom until the date leaves, content to give up his spot on the bed without a fuss (just sayin').

2) MUSIC--- classical music that makes me happy-nostalgic for childhood memories of innocence (my mom is a classical musician so classical surrounded me growing up) or nine inch nails with a hard beat that brings back happy not so innocent memories or anything I can dance or sing along to (and yes, by MUSIC I mean listening to it, singing to it, and dancing to it... and by dancing I mean club dancing, salsa, swing, you name it... love to move!)

3) Beautiful days when I remember to step outside and SEE the blue sky and sparkling water and deep green foliage and feel the breeze.... I have a gorgeous garden out back and I keep forgetting to *look* at it. Gotta do that more often.

4) Oddly enough, being busy at work. Being able to use my brain for something productive and meet a work deadline with good work product makes me almost more happy than anything. Call me sick.

5) Frog legs, either at the French food truck near my office or at the all you can eat sushi buffet restaurant.

This is a great topic. I can only think of one of the top of my head, but I may be back.

And that is... Jane Austen books and movies. The reason I like them, much more than the romance, is because everything gets so messed up and you can't imagine how it will get better, and then at the end, everything is as it should be. I guess I would like that to be my story.

1. My cats. They're such individuals, yet I love them both so much. I love when one of them flops on the ground when I walk in the door, waiting or me to pick her up. I love when the other one hops onto my knee and starts purring her heart out. I love waking up with one of them curled up next to me under the covers, and the other one lying next to my head. I love how sometimes when I get upset and just need to say something, they'll sit and look at me while I talk. I love the cute little noise and grumpy faces they make when I disturb their nap time.

2. Whatever tv series I'm currently addicted to. At the moment, it's My Little Pony (believe it or not, it's actually awesome).

3. Starting a good book, the type of book I never want to finish. Then realising when I finish, that there's a sequel.

Hmm. Reading a book I can really engage myself in makes me happy. It takes me away from the zone I find myself in frequently and sends me to a place where I want to be... Away from myself.

Spending time with my friends and playing mini golf (activities like it) make me happy, because I get to have fun, physically.
