beating myself up: "screwed up" at work

Postby applepear » Wed May 09, 2012 2:38 am

I'm in a more centered, "sane" mood than I normally could be. But I'm venting.

If anyone can relate to beating themselves up when they "screw up" at work or school. I lost an item that belongs to the school where I work; a library item; it's probably not the end of the world but I'm so embarrassed. I'm rehearsing in my mind the "worst" scenarios such as getting a bad reputation (someone who loses things, for example) or even getting fired though that's not likely....

Too complicated the details...but just needed to vent.

I hear that. One little thing goes wrong (especially at work), and I can trace a direct line between it and the end of life as we know it.

I hope you're feeling better today.

I absolutely know how that feels! I've made mistakes or had arguments with coworkers and I can't even deal with it.

I once mixed up an order at work... I trusted that one of my coworkers knew which order he was getting for me, and didn't double check. It ended up costing hundreds of dollars in profit and several hours of work. One of the managers was furious with me. I hid in the coat closet and cried. I asked to go home early, but everyone was too busy fixing my mistake... so I had to stay. But I couldn't speak to anyone without crying. And I had to help customers.

Worst day ever.

I wouldn't talk to or look directly at any of my coworkers for 2 weeks! Even though they all understood it was a simple mistake and weren't angry... even the manager apologized to me for being too harsh.

Just try to keep in mind that this is probably a bigger deal to you than to anyone else... and you didn't do it on purpose. I'm sure they'll forgive it.

Yes! I get this all the time. I know it stems from insecurity, the fear of losing my job, because it's taken so much to even get me into a position where I'm working full time as it is.

I said something stupid and embarrassing to my boss a few days ago and I've believed he's been resenting me for it ever since. He possibly hasn't.

It happens. Stay strong, try to push out the thoughts, dwell instead on what you give to your workplace, how valuable you are to them and what you can do next week at work to make you feel better.

Also the fact that sometimes saying/doing silly things is just part of being human. If anyone were to resent you for a minor error it'd be their issue.
