a new movie that really helped me connect

Postby Stripped » Mon May 07, 2012 7:06 pm

This is my first post, so I thought I'd maybe recommend some things that help me lately. I was just diagnosed borderline, among other things. I watched the movie "Greenberg" recently, I didn't know what it was about at first but found myself connecting and understanding his actions in it. Ben Stiller plays an adult in the film, just got out of a mental hospital and in my opinion, shows a lot of BPD signs. He eventually meets a woman which of course becomes turbulent and difficult, the way he treats her and reacts to those in his life is very borderline. It also shows the effects it has on those around him and how they react and treat him for it. That's what I was able to gather from seeing it, at least.

A lot of reviews I read on boards for the film made me sad because they don't understand he has a personality disorder, they just found his character unlikeable and labeled him a jerk, sadly because they just dont understand what he's going through is a real illness, or failed to recognize an illness at all. But I recognized his actions/reactions all too well. Almost right away.

I'm not sure if they said he had borderline in the film, but I do suspect it. I'm going to purchase it today along with "Prozac Nation" and the book "Stop Walking on Eggshells". I already own "Girl, Interrupted" on film. White Oleander is also another great film, the mother shows borderline traits in my opinion.

If you haven't seen "Greenberg" and you are borderline, I highly recommend it! I responded to it really well. and please, if there's any books or films you'd like to recommend here, don't be shy.

this is my first post, sorry if I rambled. I look forward to having this place as somewhere I can come to talk, learn, a little sanctuary if you will.

I'll put that on my list of must-watches.

I recommend My Week With Marilyn, based on a true story about a young film industry intern's week with Marilyn Monroe. She had BPD, which I didn't know when I watched the movie, but her character really resonated with me and the movie moved me pretty deeply.

I had heard Marilyn suffered from Bipolar, but not BPD. (but of course I could be wrong) I plan on seeing that movie anyways, now I have an extra reason :) thank you.

Sometimes you just need to watch a film that you can really connect with. I appreciated very much their decision to delve into someone who has obvious personality disorder issues, there doesn't seem to be that many Borderline films these days. Plus it's from the perscpective of a grown man, something even more rare to come by. So when I watched Greenberg I just had to recommend it

It's not a comedy, and Ben Stiller tackled the personality, whatever it may be, very well. I know Girl, Interrupted is the "go to" movie for Borderlines, but I found Greenberg to be much more realistic/relateable/adult like in these times even though I am a girl. A lot of reviews on message boards say his character is an unlikeable jerk, but when you know what borderline is, you can really make the connection.

I'd like to know if anyone else here has seen this movie and what they think about it, and his possibility of his character having BPD? or is it just me who sees it?

Hmm... my therapist and several books out there I've seen have described Marilyn as having BPD... maybe she was additionally bipolar, but after seeing that movie, I'm convinced of the borderline...

Oh, and welcome :D

adds greenberg to the list

did some sleuthing on the marilyn thing:

High Functioning
Borderline Personality disorder

Despite their extreme sensitivity and the severe emotional pain they live with, people with Borderline Personality Disorder seem to others to manifest irritating behavior rather than signs or symptoms associated with other mental illnesses.

Generally high functioning, it is not unusual for a person with BPD to graduate from college or become a doctor or lawyer. Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe were reputed to have suffered with Borderline Personality Disorder. They had the ability to "be apparently competent" that often leads loved ones and professionals to trivialize their profound suffering and to deny the appropriate recognition or care required by this painful and persistent illness.
