Bpd and meds

Postby Crow123 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:40 pm

I need advice please. I have bpd and after several hospital admissions
I have tried several meds to make me feel better.
I feel horrid all the time, I know anti depressants take ages
To work, if at all, but I need something to make me feel better now.
I have been given 5mg of Valium twice a day but it doesn't do anything, so I
Took 40mg today just to feel ok, and now have to wait til
Friday to get my next script, I'm trying not to drink but that does make me feel beret
They also gave me venlafaxine which I've had before and it didn't help then, any suggestions? X

Hi crow...

Yes, meds help. I cannot condone your taking 40 mgs of valium though. You really need to be careful with this sort of behavior, ok? We don't want anything to happen to you.

Anti-D's do take awhile to take effect, and I'm not familiar with the last med you mentioned. Feeling horrid sucks. I think most of us here have had this problem.

Anti-psychotics tend to have faster effects, but if your doctor doesn't seem to think you need them, then maybe you might just have to wait for the anti-d to take effect.

Hi

Yeah, as MissAli says that is a high dose of valium! Be careful about becoming addicted! Benzo withdrawal is horrible.

I have been given mood stabilisers, anti depressants, anti anxiety and anti psychotics. But I couldn't tolerate the side effects and had to come off them. And with the stronger medication, I felt knocked out and in a daze most of the time. I was OK on trazodone.

I was a heavy drinker which is how I dealt with my depression and anxiety, and anything I didn't want to deal with.

Since starting my recovery, I have been determined to be 'clean' and do it all naturally which seems to be working well. But I have the luxury of being quite stable and not going from crisis to crisis like I used to, and needing something to knock me out.

I only take omega 3, 5HTP and melatonin for sleeping. I also take valerian root pills when I need a mild sedative. But people can be just as sensetive to natural alternatives.

There are ways like Mindfulness that can teach you 'how to be happy' and help to deal with anxiety.

I have been doing Trauma Release Exercises which gave me pretty instant results. Reduced anxiety, sleeping better, just feeling more positive.

I can't really recommend you medication that can help, as everyone has different reactions to them.

Thanks both, it's just so hard, when I was
In hospital I was on clopixol which did numb
Everything. Tomorrow I pick up my next 40mg
And I know I'll take them all at once just to
Have a bit of time feeling ok. I've just got
Back from the pub where I had a few pints and
A few jd's and I feel ok. But then the morning comes.
I won't kill myself on 40 mg of Valium it just
Gives me some much needed time out, and my
Psychiatrist won't increase the dose, so I have
No other choice, x

I'm on a large mixture of meds. I'm on clopixol, venlafaxine, Epilim, Clonazepam and Cogentin for the side effects. I hate being on so much meds and wish I could get off the clopixol. I hate the side effects.I don't know which meds are best for borderline personality, I think it depends on the person.

Thanks for the replys, I haven't started taking
The venlafaxine as I had it in hospital and it
Didn't work then so why would it now?
I get my next Valium script in the morning and
I know I will take them all again just for some
Relief if only for a day. I just need to find a long
Term solution but can't look beyond tomorrow

Then you need to talk with your doctor, and you need to do it ASAP. Playing with the dosages on your own isn't a good idea. BPD's have enough things in life to deal with; we don't need addictions, withdrawals, & overdoses, too! Besides, those meds can mess up a bunch of things in ya, especially when you're still on alcohol. Those meds, especially in those doses, don't play nice with booze. I'm not saying that you need to cut it all out completely, but you really should dial it back, just for your own sake.

Take care of yourself, okay? We want you around to to give us grief for a long time to come, and you can't do that if you're on a hospital gurney getting jacked up with activated charcoal and Flumazenil!
