bpd and chronic fatigue syndrome

Postby omalley_cat » Sat Mar 31, 2012 11:13 am

Hi,
I just thought i'd send out a message to see if anyone else suffers from chronic fatigue like symptoms? I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue years ago, but received my bpd diagnosis more recently, and now i'm wondering if perhaps extreme exhaustion might be something thats linked to bpd as opposed to seperate to it... anyone else share these experiences?
cheers :-)

Not sure my energy levels change but i am fatigued most of the time i figured it was malnutrition though. I think chronic fatigue could go along side mental illness though.

Yes!! I am not diagnosed with CFS yet but I've had all of the symptoms for awhile. I can also say they being mentally exhausted will cause the physical exhaustion to be 10x worse. Often, ill be out of breath and been sitting in the same spot for an hour. If something is upsetting me my whole day is shot. This is more often than not unfortunately :( People don't understand and accuse me of being lazy.

It angers me when conditions such as chronic fatigue or ADHD and so forth are considered "lazy" or "need discipline." because its not true they are real conditions and those suffering from them suffer.

CFS diagnosed... would be hard because its not choosing to be lazy it's because you are constantly and well chronically fatigued. I have heard trying to exercise each day can help do you do that ?

You know, Ocat, I saw this thread earlier, but as I wasn't well versed in CFS, I was hoping that other members would have more information to add, and it looks like this may be common.

I know that I get "winded" easily, but sometimes I have just thought it WAS because I was lazy. I can be, certainly, but I think it is because the amount of mental power I use drains me.

But this is a wonderful discussion - I've really learned a few things, and I've been researching a little using wiki too.

I wonder if its the depressive part of our symptomology? Please don't take that as a generalization. I'm just trying to piece if together.

Hmmmm.... great topic :0)

At the moment i understand how you feel i am too fatigued and sore to do anything in fact I can't even hold my body up without being tired etc.

Depression has chronic fatigue systems i find anxiety drains me too. A constant flowing of thoughts and mind and over thinking = fatigued.

Hello there guys,

I thought I would put my two pennys worth in... :D

I did post something before about this, (can't remember if it was on here or not.. lol)
something almost similar..

I was dx with fibromylagia 2 years ago.. Now, this is what is strange.. I suffered with the symptoms of fibro since being around 19/20. My symptoms of BPD started at 15 (Although I never knew it was this and spent near on 18 years not knowing)..

So now at 34 I have the pains/aches and soreness within my body and tender points but also have the mental exhaustion from my BPD... Has years of tension throughout my body from BPD caused the fibro? Has years of fibro throughout my body on top of bpd made me more exhausted ?

What came forst.. the chicken or the egg? I even think sometimes 'do I really have fibromylagia or is there a new medical term that should be invented for mental health conditions causing pain throughout the body''

I vote we call it mental health pain syndrome... Or maybe not.. lol

I'm not very familiar with CFS but I have considered it before. For me, I think it's emotional exhaustion...I spend so much energy just trying to cope with my feelings...and how I feel about how I feel, and whether or not I'm "allowed" to feel what I feel, that I have no energy to do anything else. Most of the time I can barely hold my head up and will often lay on the couch because sitting up is just too hard. And in the rare moment I have without any intense feelings I spend in survival mode either trying to recouperate from the last episode or prepare myself for the next one that inevitably follows. I'm exhausted from being exhausted.

rebba:
i've heard that exercise helps too, but i think that it can go one of two ways - disaster or genuinely helpful! from research i've done, it seems that chronic fatigue is one of those weird illnesses that is usually a symptom of something else. so therefore the way you treat it is dependent on the cause in the first place. a friend of mine suffers alongside a different condition, and exercise makes her much much worse. for me, i find gentle exercise like yoga really helps especially if it becomes a regular part of my week.

that comes in to what you were saying ali - about it possibly being linked to depression. exercise releases endorphins apparently, which may help to explain why i find it helpful. unfortunately, because my mood and motivations change so swiftly, I often wont maintain any kind of timetable, let alone exercise!

demitria - i've never heard of your condition before, but i'm saddened to hear that you suffer so much. i think it is entirely possible that you're right though, and that perhaps your two seperate diagnosis are the same condition underneath?

what i'm about to say is a little "new age hippy" but i do believe that the body reflects the mind - people with bpd generally suffer and have tormented minds a lot of the time, and so it isnt really that surprising that the trauma involved in this much pain may manifest physically.

either way, CFS is one of those illnesses which isnt really researched and no one has been able to offer any real explanation for - even the name Chronic Fatigue Syndrome really just describes the symptoms back to the patient!! but it's interesting to hear peoples experiences and theories :-) X
