what is this?

Postby 5020 » Mon Jan 16, 2012 11:28 pm

OK so this is going to be really hard to articulate! Do u know that feeling you get when you feel sad after having too much caffeine? Well I am getting that on my ssri- paroxtine- at the moment. However I do not know how best to describe it and want to ensure I am some what literate before I go and see my doc. Any experiences?

I don't personally suffer from combining the two (I'm on Celexa, not Paroxetine), but the interaction between caffeine and SSRI's is a known conflict. The main effect is a negation of the positive effects and an increase in some of the effects that the drug is trying to treat, like nervousness or depression. If you go to your doctor and simply state what you have mentioned here, I'm sure he/she will understand. Your doc may put you on a different SSRI, just to see if the specifics in another brand don't have the same negative reactions in you.

Okay 5020, please help me out here with clarification.

Are you talking about the 'coming down ' or 'crash' effect after caffeine wears off, or are you combining caffeine with your ssri?

I dont have particular experience with your ssri, but JB is correct in saying that combining the two can be counterproductive.

Do you think it may be that you need to increase the dose or perhaps take them at different times in the day? Those are questions you may want to discuss with your pdoc.

That's a good point; I never thought of that. I usually take my ssri first thing in the morning, so it's at least two hours before I go looking for any caffeine, and usually it's more along the lines of 4-6 hours.

I meant that the ssri is giving me that feeling similar to that of when you crash on caffiene. i get it at intervals during the day.

I don't really drink that much caffine, about one cup of tea a day.

I take mine first thing when i get up.
