Schema therapy

Postby flowingtears » Mon Jan 09, 2012 11:22 pm

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I've been reading a little bit about it, and it seems very interesting. I think my psychologist might be incorporating aspects of it into our sessions, although she's never mentioned it. I'm one of those people who never liked DBT, and didn't get much out of it, so this looks like a possible alternative.

I only have limited session with the psychologist though, and sometimes I find it difficult to be open with her. I was wondering if this is something you'd need to do with a psychologist/therapist, or if it's something you could work on yourself?

I've been loosely working with Schema Therapy with my therapist for a couple months now... We don't stick to it rigidly because she is still trying to get to know me, but the things I have read have been pretty helpful for me when it comes to self awareness and understanding.

The book I have is more a "self-help" book, for lack of a better word. So it comes at you assuming you aren't already in therapy. It's called "Reinventing Your Life" by Jeffrey Young & Janet Klosko.
I already know where to find the answer... It's under my skin, and that's why I can't stop.

Off. Dx: Borderline & Avoidant PD's, Social Anxiety, Dysthymia, Binge Eating Disorder... Self Injurer & mild PTSD/OCD.

Thank you for your reply.
Would you consider the book a good investment? I might buy it...

I'd also be very interested in hearing any experiences regarding Schema therapy. I'm currently in DBT and I think I finally might quit, after contemplating it for some time... So I need some other kind of therapy or just give up on myself altogether.

For me, personally it was a good investment. I think it was around the $20.00 mark and even if I don't end up following it perfectly just going through the book and reading has been helpful... Plus you can always go back to it and work at your own pace because it definitely hits some difficult spots. If you're in therapy as well I feel like it helps me organize and understand my own thoughts and actions better so I can communicate more easily to my T.
I'm sure you can get similar info from the Internet but I prefer being able to sit somewhere more isolated so I can write things down as well.

I looked it up, and it's not that expensive. €8 and free delivery on the book depository. For that price I may as well give it a try. I'd prefer to have a book rather than reading stuff online. Thanks again :)

Just my brief input on schema therapy, its what my therapist incorporates and I think it proving effective, even when I was feeling bad one session his technique managed to make me not feel bad about feeling bad, which is unusual for me. In the sessions we have not gone very in depth with it, there is still a lot of ice to break! But from where its heading it seems good and I have been very resistant to therapy in the past.

In regards to the book 'reinventing your life' I prefer it over most self help books I have read, for one thing I didn't feel patronized with it, which is usually the thing that switches me of with these things. It also has a feel good vibe to it and enlightened me quiet a bit with somethings. I did find it more of an introduction though, although a very concise one. It did state repeatably that therapy is the best way to get the most out of what it was saying, so the book itself is just one part. I suppose to put you on the same track as your therapist.

Good luck to all!
