What to expect? Seeing a specailist for the 1st time today

Postby 'invisible' » Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:45 am

Hey people,

I have my 1st appointment to see a psychotherapist today. I'm pretty nervous as I don't really know what to expect, and I would imagine he/she is going to ask me some very personal questions. I really need a diagnosis so I can get some help and make this all a bit better but I'm so nervous I'm considering not going, But I have waited on the NHS for aaggeess to get this appointment. Its only in a few hours and as the time goes by I'm getting more and more freaked out by this.

What shall I expect from this??
Are they actually going to help me??

Much love. x

It's just a conversation, nothing to worry about. They will help you as much as you let them. It's up to you to open up and put your issues out there. The more you share, the more they can assist you in understanding and perhaps coping with it.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Ah yeah, good old NHS. xD
You should have an assessment first, so if you haven't had that, you will get that first. If you've already had that, you'll probably be diagnosed same day like I did.
It was only because I had a very long assessment with a duty worker beforehand, and then a month or so later had the psychiatrist appointment and was then diagnosed there, and she even said I had Bipolar traits but that's another story.

Anyways, don't worry, the type of questions they'll ask you will be about family life, friendships, relationships, social life, emotions, moods, lots of stuff. You don't need to worry about thinking what to say as they'll ask you a lot of questions, but if you wanna take notes with you, feel free to do so.

Don't worry if you cry or fall apart in the session or whatever, I do it all the time. xD

Good luck!
