BPD and obsession

Postby mjpam » Fri Nov 11, 2011 3:48 am

Is obsession a feature of BPD?

I haven't so much obsessed with "belonging" to one person, but more with taking membership in paticular group. I'm not sure that the former is much different from the latter, because both seem to have to do with deriving identity from an external affiliation.

Thoughts?

I dunno so much obsession - but isn't struggling with our identity one of the aspects of BPD? Trying to figure out who we are and always struggling to narrow it down?

I don't really obsess personally, I just stress.

Deriving identity from an external affiliation is most definitely a BPD trait. I think that your question is much more about identity than it is about obsession. I've changed religions so many times, and I can't say that I have ever actually believed in any of them. I was just looking for a group of people to identify with, and if nice statues were part of it then all the better.
I believe one writes because one has to create a world in which one can live. I could not live in any of the worlds offered to me —
I had to create a world of my own, like a climate, a country, an atmosphere in which I could breathe, reign, and recreate myself when destroyed by living.

mooshoo, you are very perceptive to note that my question is also about identity. The reason I also connected is with obsession is that I have placed myself in situation in which I would never plausibly be accepted by the members of a given groups and then fought tooth-and-nail to gain acceptance therein. My tenacity in the face of exclusion may relate to the fear of abandonment, but I sought out scenarios in which I would be likely to be rejected, which I am not sure is commonly associated with BPD.

I didn't mean to gainsay you. I still know so little about BPD.

I obsess over things.

Could be people: To try and keep people around I've often become obsessed with them and tried to do everything in my power to be exactly who they're looking for. I adopted all kinds of traits that I don't really have. I study people anyway, but it's less obsessive unless I'm worried about leaving.

Could be things: I get on vendettas about things. I HAVE to rearrange the house. I HAVE to remodel this or that. I NEED to learn this language... it drops off eventually, though. I get bored with it or I find something else to do.

This is me..In fact, latest post is about this.
