Does the Chatroom make anyone else socially anxious?

Postby mooshoo » Thu Nov 03, 2011 12:47 am

It's been brought to my attention by a couple of my favorite people on this forum that I don't go into the chat room. To be honest, it scares the hell out of me. Okay, that is a bit dramatic and an exaggeration. However, it does really trigger my social anxiety, which I really have been diagnosed with. IRL many people find it surprising that I am shy, because I don't come across that way. But I am!!
Please tell me if I am alone in feeling overwhelmed by chat!
I believe one writes because one has to create a world in which one can live. I could not live in any of the worlds offered to me —
I had to create a world of my own, like a climate, a country, an atmosphere in which I could breathe, reign, and recreate myself when destroyed by living.

I felt the same way, before I made myself try it. Everyone is so friendly and will let you just read if you don't want to join in. I seriously resisted going into chat and this is the only one I have ever tried. It is the same people as in this forum, so you know them already.

Nope.. I quite the opposite. I feel it helpful talking to others, and have made some friends. It's nice talking to others that can relate, and getting to know some of the people posting in the forum. I'm glad we have the chatroom... In my opinion it brings more of a closenes with people in the forum!

No, you're not alone Mooshoo, it's a bit too scary for me. I know that we already talk to the same people by posting. I don't know what it is, but the anxiety does kick in and stop me.

Well I wish you girls would come chat sometime. You can just listen or watch - a lot of people do that. It's very supportive.

I like it because it makes me feel not so alone. I don't have a lot of friends or much of a social life, so it's nice to go there and talk to people who understand.

Moosh it's okay to be anxious, but like any social situation, you have to assess it first before you jump in. You can always come in and lurk - some people do that for days before they find the courage to talk to anyone. And I promise I won't bite!

I am a bit nervous about trying out this chat room - only because I'm new to this forum and don't really *know* anyone if you know what I mean. I used to belong to a closed email loop with 7 other moms and we used to do chat sessions all of the time. They were lots of fun! Even though many of us had never met each other in person, we had shared a lot online, and we felt like we knew each other because the loop had been together for over 10 years.
