Affirmations -- share please. :)

Postby kirayng » Fri Oct 14, 2011 7:55 pm

It occurred to me sometime today that I've been holding onto some affirmations and I realized they're not actually affirmations!

Like, my life's motto has been: "this too shall pass", having a double meaning - 1. this moment if negative, I know it will not last and 2. if the moment is positive, I must relish it because it will end. As many other things I've told myself, I am thinking this has also been colored by BPD. The more I look at it, the more I see it as black and white thinking, part of my defense mechanisms I'm working so hard to bring into conscious control.

So after these thoughts I was reading some on the internet and I came across a real affirmation, and because of the tricky nature of my thoughts sometimes, can you all tell me if it a real one? Also, can some of you share your affirmations with us?

The one I found is, "If you choose well in the now, the rest will take care of itself."

Affirmations are positive things that we say to ourselves to create success and greater self esteem. They can work if you find the right one and if you know which one to use. I used a Shakespearean speech that assisted me in getting my BSW at Ole Miss, but now I have no mantra.
One of the greatest blasphemies is the taking of one's freedom of thought, dictating matters of the heart and the theft of another's personal peace.

Everyday I live is an act of rebellion.

Shakespeare wrote a bunch of plays and stuff and there is a play about King Henry IV and I used that speech during college to give me strength to keep going. _________________________________________________________

I know you all, and will awhile uphold
The unyoked humour of your idleness. (Judgemental people keep judging but I know the truth).
Yet herein will I imitate the sun, ( I will keep working towards my goals despite you).
Who doth permit the base contagious clouds
To smother up his beauty from the world,
That when he please again to be himself,
Being wanted, he may be more wondered at
By breaking through the foul and ugly mists
Of vapours that did seem to strangle him. ( For now, I won't stop you from gossiping;
when I get my degree, I will prove you
wrong).
If all the year were playing holidays,
To sport would be as tedious as to work; (If we just played, work would be pleasant)
But when they seldom come, they wished-for come,
And nothing pleaseth but rare accidents. (But things which don't happen are missed)
So, when this loose behaviour I throw off (So, when I get my degree/get married/act right)
And pay the debt I never promisèd,
By how much better than my word I am,
By so much shall I falsify men’s hopes; (I'll show people how wrong they are)
And like bright metal on a sullen ground, (Like a sword against the solid color of a sheild)
My reformation, glitt’ring o’er my fault, (my betterment will show in contrast to my bad behavior)
Shall show more goodly and attract more eyes
Than that which hath no foil to set it off. (The contrast will be more noticed than if I hadn't acted)

I’ll so offend to make offence a skill,
Redeeming time when men think least I will. ( I will make progress when folks think I can't)
(I.ii.173–195)

Yea, after looking at it it wasn't the best way to go, but it worked for the time I used it. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but this speech helped me all through college. It might have been on a 1.9999999999999999999999 GPA but it was worth it.

Yea. Try to get a prayer, a poem or a speech that fits you and give it a try.
