prozac not working anymore.

Postby mydogismyonlyfriend » Fri Oct 07, 2011 6:41 pm

I think prozac only worked for about 3 days. I think that there was a period not too long ago where I wasn't depressed every f-ing day but since my last episode I can't seem to really get out of this. I wake up ok but eventually I just keep getting sucked back into this major depression every day. I can't take it anymore. I have no insurance. I have no therapist. No friends. No drugs that work. I tried the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy workbook because it's supposed to be the best thing for BPD, but it's ridiculous. My main form of self-harm is pulling out my eyebrows, which I can't stop doing and I hate myself for it. I feel so ugly. And fat. I wish I had some validation. I don't know what else to say. I don't really want any advice because I am hopeless...

How long were you on Prozac? I took it for four weeks then I changed to Lexapro. Prozac was making me feel suicidal, it really didn't work well at all for me. You should definitely talk to your doctor about how it's making you feel.
I'm sorry that you feel so awful. Use this forum for support. We are here to listen to you.

do you know if you are better on ssri's or snri's? i can't (personally) do ssri's...they either made me zombie like or a binge eater. i've been through about 6 different ones and finally found the one that fit. i completely empathize with you and being on a med that doesn't 'fit'.

all i know is that drugs like paxil and effexor cause me to gain weight uncontrollably. my options are really limited. especially since i don't have insurance. maybe i'm better off with nothing. i don't feel any better than i did when i was taking nothing.

and since it costs $100 per dr's visit and i was just there, i don't see a point in going back for another wrong prescription. i won't be talking to anyone. i give up.

I can completely sympathize with you on the medication rollercoaster. At the moment I desperately need something to work for me, but all the meds are failing me. After reaching round 21 with antidepressants, we've moved onto anxiety meds.

I take iron supplements each day, as well as a Vitamin B complex (B6 specifically is supposed to be good for mood swings- in the general population, not so much with what we deal with. You have to be careful taking it on its own). I have missed the odd day and I become easily teary and emotional, so it does have some effect, even if I don't feel like it's much at the moment. I have heard that magnesium is meant to be helpful, along with omega 3 fish oil. Personally I can't take the fish oil- it triggers panic attacks for some reason in me.

I know full well that these things are not going to have the same level of effect as antidepressants, but it's better than nothing.

How long were you on the Prozac for?

I was on the prozac for a couple of weeks.

I've already been taking vitamins, D and B complex.

Hi :)
Docs have always told me that you need to give an antidepressant 6 weeks to start to have any effect, and 3 months to have full effect. Unless you are experiencing severe side effects, you are supposed to see out the 3 months and then decide if it's working for you. I feel like I've been on most ssri's, snri's, and tricyclic out there....often combined, and often further combined with mood stabilisers and antipsychotics.
The first time I tried prozac, it took about 2 months to work, and then it worked great. 6 weeks later it stopped working and my dose was increased. 6 weeks later and it stopped. Cycle continued until I ended up on a massive dose of 160mgs a day.....combined with about 15 tablets of other psych drugs. That dose was crazy and made me psychotic and the doctor saw reason and changed me to other meds. For me, most of the time a med loses its effectiveness after 3 months.....but I do see a *honeymoon* period from 6 weeks to 3 months when things are a lot better. Everyones different.....some people are on prozac for many years and do well. The second time I tried it, I was instantly very sick all the time and my mood was wayyyyy worse. The side effects caused me to cut it short.

I guess the point is, is that finding the right med or meds and the right doseages appears to be more of an art than a science. It takes patience and trial and error. You might get lucky and find the right meds straight away or it may take a dozen tries. After all that you may be one of the people who copes better off meds. But for the vast majority, when you find the right combination of meds you can find it is a very integral part of treating your symptoms and grabbing back your life.

I hope this helped some in some way. *hugs* :)

Considering that I'm one of those people who gains weight from them, I'm done with meds. Period.

I'm in the same boat. Fluoxetine does nothing for me. I'm on Lovan, another form of Prozac. Hate it. Does nothing for me. But sadly I don't have a psychiatrist at the moment, or a psychologist, and my doctor is an idiot, so I'm stuck. I wasn't good on Effexor either, I went into zombie mode, I couldn't feel a thing... I empathise with you. I'm finished with meds as well, they never help...
I need some meaning I can memorize,

I was also a zombie on effexor. And I'm the blueberry girl from Charlie and the Chocolate factory on everything else. I actually think I felt worse on prozac...odd. Paxil was nice until I realized I'd gained 50 pounds and wanted to throw myself off a bridge. Doctors have started prescribing prozac for PMDD and they say it is helpful even if you only take it the week before your period. It apparently doesn't need time to "kick in." We will see. Once I start PMDDing and all hell breaks loose, I might take it then and only then.
