Hi

Docs have always told me that you need to give an antidepressant 6 weeks to start to have any effect, and 3 months to have full effect. Unless you are experiencing severe side effects, you are supposed to see out the 3 months and then decide if it's working for you. I feel like I've been on most ssri's, snri's, and tricyclic out there....often combined, and often further combined with mood stabilisers and antipsychotics.
The first time I tried prozac, it took about 2 months to work, and then it worked great. 6 weeks later it stopped working and my dose was increased. 6 weeks later and it stopped. Cycle continued until I ended up on a massive dose of 160mgs a day.....combined with about 15 tablets of other psych drugs. That dose was crazy and made me psychotic and the doctor saw reason and changed me to other meds. For me, most of the time a med loses its effectiveness after 3 months.....but I do see a *honeymoon* period from 6 weeks to 3 months when things are a lot better. Everyones different.....some people are on prozac for many years and do well. The second time I tried it, I was instantly very sick all the time and my mood was wayyyyy worse. The side effects caused me to cut it short.
I guess the point is, is that finding the right med or meds and the right doseages appears to be more of an art than a science. It takes patience and trial and error. You might get lucky and find the right meds straight away or it may take a dozen tries. After all that you may be one of the people who copes better off meds. But for the vast majority, when you find the right combination of meds you can find it is a very integral part of treating your symptoms and grabbing back your life.
I hope this helped some in some way. *hugs*
