Hair falling out

Postby poppyfields » Tue Sep 27, 2011 11:32 am

I have "emerging" BPD, among other things. Been on Citolopram (20mg) for around 5 months with Quetiapine (Serequel) for 2 months. I have noticed my hair is falling out. When I wake up every morning, there is clumps of it on my pillow. It also comes out in my hands when I brush/wash it. Has anybody experienced anything similar? Is it worth talking to my psychiatrist about it? I don't know. I feel like I should shut up & get over it. It's only hair. It'll grow back. I suppose I'm just upset because it's another thing I have lost to this lovely disorder.

Any comments would be much appreciated.
Thank you, poppyfields.

Poppyfields, I am sorry to hear about your hair falling out. I definitely think that you should mention that to your psychiatrist. Your doctor needs to know that the med is having that effect on you. There is every reason why you should want this issue addressed. You're important; your health is important; your self-esteem is important.

Take care.

Have a word with your psych. It's not just hair though, is it, I mean it's something else to worry about, and that can't be good for you.

It's most likely the Serequel...

It's a very common compliant about the medication.

Antipsychotics function by diminishing dopamine levels, and low dopamine levels are going to cause your hair to fall out. Serequel is one of the worst culprits amongst them and I'd say --from experience-- it is as it's amongst the more powerful atypical antipsychotics. I didn't stay on it for any extended period as I found it too sedating.

If the antidepressant causes it as well, then no wonder...

Thanks for all your replies. I'll mention it to my doctors & see what they say. I just thought it may be stress, I feel better that I'm not the only one experiencing this!

Thanks again, poppyfields
