My Dad once told me...

"It's a Fathers job to give you a bunch of useless advice that you can't do anything with."

It was one of his finer moments...

If I have a child I'm going to say that to them... lol.

You know, I'd never considered it that way? I mostly saw it as a humorous statement on his part. It never occurred to me that his statement was connected in a negative manner to his relationship with his father--which in his childhood was not fantastic, ditto with his mother. My dad was not without his faults, but he did offer me some invaluable advise at times.

My dad uses sarcasm as his main tool of covering up any sorrow. It morphed into a form of humor though, and while sometimes very funny it was --every bit as often-- not always delightful. For instance, it's never funny when someone is made the butt of it; in that case it becomes a weapon.

I love DS9 by the way, I love Star Trek full stop. Garak is one of my favorite characters; so, nice avatar.

And my dad said that statement on the heels of giving me advice that I didn't find especially helpful, as young children often don't. It was both a joke and a serious statement in one sentence; which, is what makes it funny. Does no one get that (I know you got it, Twisted)? Yeah, my post was not meant to be disparaging towards my father.

As I said, it was one of his finer moments. The remark combines insight, self-deprecating humor, passing of wisdom, a bonding moment between father and son, and sarcasm all in one neat, small, wrapped up package.

I suppose I just expected people to get it...

:P Sounds like something my dad would tell me..

Although his best quote for me was "A poor man buys cheap tools".

I'm a woman. Is that helpful? No. Refer to the quote above .

Oh, I can't forget another one of his quotes I look back and laugh at.

"Watch your f---ing language."

The inherent irony was deliberate...

We needed the paint you used on the tapestry of your mind, my friend. :)

Anyone ever read Calvin and Hobbes?
His dad's great in that - made me think when I was younger that if I had a kid, that's what I would do - make up a bunch of stories and pass it off as the truth...

Calvin: Why does the sun set?
Calvin's Dad: Because hot air rises. The sun's hot in the middle of the day, so it rises high in the sky. In the evening then, it cools down and sets.
Calvin: Why does it go from east to west?
Calvin's Dad: Solar wind.
Calvin's Mom: (off-panel) Dear!

Well I have a kid now but I'm the serious parent, or at least the one who tells the husband off for coming up with a ludicrous story for why the sky is blue...
He who knows, does not speak. He who speaks, does not know.
