Anyone else here have MDD?

Postby matter » Tue Sep 13, 2011 3:28 am

Major Depressive Disorder; I heard it's the same thing as Clinical Depression, don't know for sure. But I've pretty much been severely depressed for most of the last 15 years. Definitely not the same as Bipolar, where you get to go to the opposite extreme, not that I'm saying that's any easier... But I pretty much have had very few moments of actual happiness. It's a tough thing to try changing (as in CBT/DBT) or to even have faith that it's possible to change, even though I've been in therapy for more than 10 years. And I don't really go through cycles that include all the emotions with happiness being one, I kind of just go through all of the other ones. I know that MDD isn't always coexisting with BPD, so I'm just wondering if anyone here knows what I'm talking about

Yes, I've had it for 16 straight years now. BPD symptoms were put down to Major Depression, or I was told "let's treat the symptoms rather than look for a label."

It's not uncommon for people to have both; and it sucks.

Major depression is a usual handmaiden to BPD... there would be some BPD's with mood lability more like bipolar however mania is not part of BPD, so you'd find most BPD's would possibly relate closely to your experiences. Everyone I did BPD DBT with had comorbid major depression. Hope this helps and gives you hope that it can be managed.

Yes- it's hell. I've only had it for 11 years. So it was hanging round long before BPD popped its head up, but was definitely one of the roots of my BPD- string of counsellors (numbers are in the double figures) made it worse through invalidating me and not believing that I hadn't been abused. I go back to the doctor next week to see if he's come up with any ideas on meds (they're in double figures too). I'm not feeling very hopeful.

Like you apocallcaps, my original doctor (I don't go to him anymore) just wanted to call everything I had depression when there was clearly something else going on.

I don't know your history. I hope you don't mind me asking if your doctor is a gp or whether you have already been referred to a pdoc? GP's tend not to dx anything outside of anxiety and depression - the ones I know of anyway... anything else they tend to refer to pdoc.

Yes, my doctor is a GP, but he's contacted a psychiatrist doctor friend and discussed my case with him (with my permission) to get advice what to try next, because I react to everything. I've seen a pdoc, she was useless, wanted to put me straight back on the meds I'd reacted most violently to, and I felt completely insulted by her because my cutting wasn't good enough because she couldn't see the scars from the other side of the table. I live in a country area, my next option for a pdoc is about a 5 hour drive away, or a plane flight.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a little black raincloud today. Appropriate for a post on MDD isn't it?

Thanks for clarifying. Health care is tough for people in remote areas for sure.

(We might have fumes in the city, but luckily we have doctors to tell us the damage the pollution is doing to our lungs :P)

Sounds like you are working well within the parameters set by circumstance. I hope you keep on refining your treatment to what works best for you. Sounds like you are doing a great job of it. :)

Yes, I was diagnosed BPD with depression, as though the depression is somewhat separate from the BPD? I remember being prescribed diazepam when I was 17 and I know I was suffering from depression way before that, so it started quite early for me. Hmm, I've just realised that I've been on medication for more years than I haven't been
