BPD and selective mutism?

Postby Leslieslsa » Sat Jul 16, 2011 5:32 am

I have BPD and possibly a bit of Asperger's. But I noticed when I go into my "negative" mode, I cannot talk to people. It's like a switch flicks off in my head. I will have all of the negative thoughts swirling in my head, and no way to release them besides self mutilation and childish tantrums. I will do this in front of other people sometimes. I work at Kmart and if a customer "flicks my switch" and makes me mad, I will snap a rubberband on my wrist really hard right in front of them, but I am unable to argue. Does this happen with any other BPDers or is this part of Asperger's?

I have BPD and this definitely happens to me. As much as I want to express myself verbally and say what is happening in my head, I literally cannot.
Know one has ever suggested I may have aspergers and I dont know too much about it, so I cant say if its part of aspergers or not..
However, I really do relate to your post. It is one of my major issues in therapy.

I've noticed that too with myself. I have quite a few of the points for Aspergers, but not enough to actually be diagnosed. But I just asked my husband too - he finds he can't speak when he gets very negative, and he's not even close to having Aspergers.

This is me to a T. Always. Mostly think it goes hand in hand with an inability to concentrate, pay attention, focus or organise my thoughts. It's like my mind can only think about itself but I can't express any of it.

I can relate. When I get angry my first inclination is to cry. Then I want to lash out but I can't because I can't deal with confrontation.

I made a post in the therapy forum, then later responded to it myself. In my reply I was nasty. Just seemed viscious to me. I only just found that and had no idea I had done it. If that's not BPD and DID at work, I don't know what is.

I can also relate. But for me, i think its more of a way of coping with anger without getting physical and it just got to the other extreme. Though...it really depends. I have a very aggressive alter and when i am influenced by him the first reaction is to get physical. And if i get very angry i feel my minds gets blocked and i have no reaction sometimes.

It really depends on who's around. :|

I cannot speak when I am angry. If I am touched when I'm angry, it feels like an electric shock going through me. Does it feel like that for anyone else?

I don't feel a shock but it makes me jerk away as if I had been shocked.

Yeah selective mutism. I just had to smile at that. Because i really have to work at processing what people are saying or i might say or do things that are not to social norms at sometimes.

I have learned to completely shut down to the point where I don't talk, don't cry...show no reaction..meanwhile there is a storm raging in my head. People close to me know what they will get if I'm raging. I have a horrid temper and I think I use not talking as a way to let myself simmer down because I can't put my thoughts together rationally. It's OK to do this in my book, because I would rather that than to say things I can't take back or act out in anger...
