Medications for Borderline

Postby BioHazard » Sat Jul 02, 2011 10:43 pm

I was wondering what meds are typically used for borderline, but so I don't spam the board with a bunch of single question topics, do all borderlines have severe childhood trauma? I fit nearly all the criteria except my anger has mellowed out in the mid twenties, but the every few hour mood swing, fear of rejection/abandonment, complete despair, binge/emotional eating, suicidal ideations, previous history of rocky relationships- but that seems to have somewhat mellowed out too, identity issues. I had a mostly normal childhood- except for being raised Church of Christ (seriously, strict, judgmental environment) and moving around a lot. Anyway, curious about both because even though I don't have the time to commit to this with 65 hour school/work week coming up, I could adjunct or switch meds. I'm currently on Paxil 40 mg everyday. Paxil and Prozac are the only SSRIs that help and don't make me go crazy!

there is no medications that treat borderline just the symptoms (eg anxiety, depression, mood swings)
but there is no medications to treat borderlines most meds are used "off label use"
i find seroquel helps me
but everyone is different so meds affect everyone differently
antidepressants for me make me more violent and aggressive so i dont take them
makes it harder to treat my anxiety because i cant be put on antidepressants

I have rapidly changing moods and I have trouble with impulsivity and anger, so I've been given Depakote, which apparently helps treat all three of those symptoms. I'm also on several antidepressants and I take Geodon, which does nothing but help me sleep. I got prescribed these medicines back when my old doctor assumed I was bipolar, but now they all know I'm not bipolar at all, so I believe I shouldn't be on these meds, or at least not all of them.

After being admitted to hospital, I was put on Cipralex (Canadian version of Lexapro?), It's an SSRI.
They gave it to me mainly for anxiety, but also for depressed mood. My therapist says it should help even out the mood swings. I guess it does do that.
It has helped my social anxiety and other anxieties (maybe too much sometimes, it has caused more reckless driving etc.. or so I'm finding).
But despite these benefits I feel uck on it, for lack of a better word. I feel so flat sometimes.. it has almost been making me more depressed. I used to have more dramatic emotions but now it is more flat which has made me feel sort of sh*tty ironically.
It also makes me happy to sleep ALL the time. Which is a positive during the night, a negative during the day..
But like others said, no meds for BPD, just the symptoms..

I've heard the BPD'ers can have unusual reactions to meds like SSRI's though. I had a bizarre hypomania type reaction when I started cipralex. Luckily I was in psych group home at the time so nurses are there 24/7 and a saw a pdoc everyday. They monitored it and decided it wasnt a bipolar reaction because euphoria wasnt present (just irritability, talkativeness, racing thoughts.. i felt like i was on speed) and it subsided after 2 days or so.

Right now I am taking Lamictal. It seems to be helping control my mood swings most of the time. I've had a lot of adverse reactions to antidepressants though. Zoloft really messed with my mood swings and citalopram made severely manic. Right now I am taking Prozac and it seems to be helping ok, but it might just be the lamictal and the prozac isn't doing anything.

As for childhood trauma, mine wasn't terrible. I did have an alcoholic and very abusive father, and my mother smothered me with attention to overcompensate for it. After seeing how awful some people's childhoods on here I realize that I could have had it a lot worse.

do all borderlines have severe childhood trauma?

From what I've read, not everyone has to suffer through "trauma." Lots of different folk from different backgrounds can suffer from BPD.

I'm currently on Paxil 40 mg everyday. Paxil and Prozac are the only SSRIs that help and don't make me go crazy!

What kind of effects are the Paxil having on you? I've read that SSRIs can cause all kinds of issues in BPDers- I know my own experience with Paxil just seemed to worsen my Dissociation. It'd be cool if you can find something that really works for you, and just makes you feel better. :)

I'd like some advice myself on looking for the right med. I just started getting treatment for the BPD (finally got a diagnosis, which is hard for someone without insurance and not much of a job!), so I'm trying to educate myself on what I'm taking, and how it's going to affect me. Paxil and Remeron haven't been helping at all. The Remeron really messed me up at work, so I got my hours cut. /sigh. :(

i can concour that ssri's can have a bad effect, they made me hypomanic for a week and disasociated for 6 months, completely fked my head.

Effexor made me go numb, I couldnt feel a thing. I'm on Lovan atm, I don't feel it helps at all, it does nothing really.. My moods are still all over the place.

But not every person who is diagnosed with bpd has had a hard life. I also moved around a lot when I was younger, maybe moving and leaving everyone behind has something to do with it? Also, it sounds like you were raised in a very strict household, maybe keeping in all your emotions or not being able to express yourself properly has contributed to it? These are all just assumptions though. I was sexually abused when I was younger, and my mother has bpd herself so I was kind of doomed from the beginning! Lucky me...

my partner uses Carbamazepine, Zyprexa, an SSRI,and a benzodiazepine (a lot). Must have the constitution of a horse because if i'd take that i'd be out for the count. She's completely normal though. Active and happy.

I guess each has to discover his own mix to combat the negative symptoms without adding a load of side effects to your burden.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.
