How come BPD doesn't generally affect education?

Postby CJD87 » Tue Apr 26, 2011 11:22 pm

I notice BPD people still tend to do well in things such as jobs and school, it's mainly just personal relationships that suffer. Why is that?

Why would you think it would affect education?
It's not a developmental disorder, it's a personality disorder.
Our problem is social interaction, not the ability to learn and synthesize information...

Not really following the train of thought...
But would love to help.

Some don't do all that well in jobs or school. It can be quite possible to be BPD and still be an A student or a top notch professional… but often many of the symptoms of BPD can get in the way of that. Like the low self esteem, fear of criticism, occasional loss of control in some cases… and in my opinion, one of the most problematic issues may just be the instability in our personalities that makes it difficult to "stick" to one thing for a long period of time without losing interest in it…

Hopefully all this can be overcome though.

for me it did indirectly. lost love (infatuation at that point) causing depression and clouding the thoughts.

its just about the suroundings i think, if there are not so many triggers then your good to go.

because most issues are directed at relationships i guess, but stress in relationships can affect work & education too, and people here have complained about BPD affecting work.

i have had problems with work & education, but id also agree its not the issues i have that are more BPD-like that have caused that (except maybe job/career hopping lol) but anger/control issues that to be fair belong elsewhere, and some social anxiety/avoidence/self esteem stuff.

It can influence education, even if not intelligence. I've lost almost all motivation/ intellectual curiosity recently because of obsessive thoughts and depression. I can easily understand how people would just completely lose interest/ motivation in these moments.

Im a B studen with F's because I skip school alot, and I am have spent 16 days in the psycho ward in the past few months. I think it does affect education
I suppose any of my theories cannot be counted as creditable however. I am a 17 year old, a senior in highschool. BUT Psychology is my passion! So I am looking for the general opinion and professional advice to aid it, and I hope for comments to disregard my age and creditably.

I can't do menial labor/sales/things that I don't think are of utmost importance. Drives me to want to stick forks in my eyes to feel so useless. I do well in school because I like the recognition and praise I get from it.

Interesting stuff, here's another question for you guys.

From what I've read in this thread, if someone with BPD does really well in school, like is an A student, does that mean there BPD is most likely mild or can it still be a very bad case?

I learn so much about BPD from being here, thanks everyone for the help.
