How many of you have actually been diagnosed with BPD?

Postby iwish » Fri Dec 10, 2010 5:29 am

Are you guys doing a lot of self-diagnosing? I know that psychiatrists don't like to diagnose people with personality disorders and usually use an Axis I disorder like mood disorders or something.

I was diagnosed, but unofficially. The reason for this, if I remember my psychiatrist's words correctly, is that where I live, treatment for personality disorders is not paid for by health insurance companies, whereas practically everything else is. So officially, my diagnoses are really a mixture of depression, GAD, OCD and the like.

It's a bit stupid, but whatever. I suppose that's how the world is.

I'm sorry, I must have missed it. From my experience on these sorts of forums, lots of people self-diagnose so I was curious how many actually got the label. Psychiatrists are very reluctant to label people with a personality disorder. It sounds so final and almost unmanageable.

well, in my case, i discovered BPD on the net during some real self-burrowing, and it fit me so well, i'd say about 80% of it.
So, unaware of the stigma, I went to get a professional's perspective and mentioned BPD, i didn't wait for them to come up with a diagnosis.

After a couple of analyses sessions, the psychiatrist said i have enough traits to qualify. I was sent to a therapist who throughout our few sessions, was very reluctant to use the label. The therapist was expressing her doubts, and whether she was sincere or doing it so that I don't get hung up on the label i don't know.

I know i am a combination of BPD and HPD. A mood disorder would definately be something I have.

I was diagnosed by a mental health professional. I always knew it was something, but I couldn't figure it out.
An extremely anxious and depressed individual with a Borderline personality.

Borderline Personality Disorder with histrionic traits to be precise. I was in the military at the time. I had a hard time taking him seriously because he was all offended because I didn't tell him about something that had happened to me that he felt was horrible and I knew was irrelevant to the actual problems. He was busy being offended and kicking me out, and I was on the war path. Not a lot of room for therapeutic communication. this was 16 years ago.
The map is not the territory.

When I was about 16 a GP told me I had depression and GAD, I didn't go to a doctor again until last year(age 20), who thought that I had Rapid Cycling Bipolar, referred my to a psychiatrist, who after a few months diagnosed me as BPD, got into therapy a few months later and my therapist agreed with the diagnosis. She also told me she thought I had PTSD but this has never been confirmed. My psych makes me feel like a bit of a hypochondriac so I tend not to ask about further diagnoses anymore.

If I was to self-diagnose i'd probably say: BPD, APD, PTSD, EDNOS, GAD and social anxiety. :)
