feigning being dyslexic??

Postby miss_understood » Sun May 09, 2010 11:30 pm

I just wondered if anyone has come across someone with BPD feigning that they are dyslexic?

My daughter (aged 17 and yet to be diagnosed) has always been very clever, her handwriting and spelling have always been excellent, but recently she has started to write her 'S' and 'N' s the wrong way round. Her college tutors and pyschiatrist are baffled and think it MAY be an attention seeking scam. She has recently been diagnosed as dyslexic, which was a surprise to me!!!

I am baffled - one day, about a year ago, I was looking at her college work, and EVERY SINGLE LETTER was written the wrong way round. I questioned her about it and she said that it was just a joke and that she was 'mimicing' another student who had problems with her writing. Since that day, she has never brought her college work home with her. But, she likes to do crosswords and I have noticed that she is writing her S and N the wrong way round and i can't understand it. I believe that she has had to concentrate on writing these letters back to front and now it just comes naturally.

She recently completed an application form for her college allowance, but all her letters including the S and N were written perfectly! Is she pulling a fast one? Is this to increase the attention that she gets at college (she already has one to one tutoring).

I'd love to know if anyone else has experienced similar with their BPD teenager.

Thanks

I write my letters strange sometimes, for fun.

I just like the way it looks.

If she's using it for official documents, she needs to realize she could get in trouble for it- colleges will probably give her application a second look.

How on earth did she get diagnosed as dyslexic?

Hi Pairou and thank you for your response. but -

I don't think you understood me...

she writes her letters back to front when writing in crosswords etc... but when she is filling in official documents, her writing is perfect!

I don't know how she managed to be diagnosed as dyslexic... I never saw any traits of it when she was younger - her writing was perfect, her spellings were in advance of her years and all her letters were all in order!

That's what I'm asking...... is this a trait of borderlines? Is this something they tend to do for attention? I know for a FACT that she's not dyslexic, but she has managed to convince the professionals that she IS!!

Whoops- reread that, you're right, sorry!

Mimicing is a trait- but it sounds like it's just a quirk of hers. She could have convinced the pros because she wants some attention. But before you turn to BPD to solve this particular oddity, ask yourself if it could just be for fun. Like I said, I write my letters weird as well, just because I like to- usually S's, N's, and E's. They're the easiest to write backwards and they are used in a lot of popular comics I've read.

No - she doesn't write like that 'just for fun'.

I have questioned her about it and she said that it's the way she 'sees' letters.

Very interesting that you say that the letters S, N and E are the easiest to write backwards, as they're the ones she writes backwards all the time.

After questioning why she writes her letters PROPERLY on official documents - to which her answer was that she has to 'really concentrate'..... I found a document that she has filled in tonight, and the 'S' and the 'N' throughout are the wrong way round.

is she playing games with me??

I still think she's just going through a 'thing.' But I wish you luck all the same. :]

She's clearly faking, and has some motive behind. Usually BPDs want some form of care/love/attention-- this in interesting way of doing it though.

Thank you, mc693.

Yes, she IS faking it and it's not for 'fun'! She has all the professionals confused and she has today completed another form which has all 'S' and 'N' the RIGHT way round!!

Thanks for your reply - my daughter is very complex.

Yeah all BPDs are complex, but her manipulation is very typical borderline behavior, and I'm glad you see that she clearly IS faking. My ex would pull stuff like that all the time, like just fool me for no apparent reason to the point where I'd be like "what the F&^% are trying to do here?!"...sometimes even she didn't realize what she was doing but would later admit it. Very complex, I agree.

Lol @ the people saying that she is doing it for fun-- gimme a break! haha
