counselling

Postby questions_to_ask » Sat Dec 06, 2008 7:53 am

i'd like to ask people of this forum whether counselling has helped them or not?

is there a specific type of counselling that is used to help someone with symptoms of bpd? or is it different depending on what type of doctor you go to see?

thanks

Hi,

I can't imagine there being counsellors out there that are specific for BPD. I believe that a person with BPD would be more likely to see a counsellor for depression. I received a few counselling sessions and, althought they were helpful, they never actually solved any problems. What did solve [some of] my problems was going to a therapist.

Hi, questions_to_ask! Try to find a therapist who wants to help and work hard.

Most definately there are counselors who can help with your BPD. Mine is trained in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). I do individual counseling & group therapy for DBT.

In DBT you are sort of re-trained on interpersonal skills & things. You learn to think before you act, you learn to make better decisions, you learn how to say what you want and get what you want.

I have been active in DBT for over a year now. My life has improved sooooo much. I can see it, my closest friends and family can see it. I don't get nearly as angry as I used to get, I don't cry as much as I used to cry. My emotions are better controlled. There is hope. I swear.

You need a counselor who is trained in DBT for BPD. Not many are trained to do this, so you need to be sure your counselor is.

I just wanted to write in response to your question that yes, counseling has really helped, along with DBT. :D

DBT is therapy though, right? I think she was looking for a counsellor - Are you sure that there are BPD counsellors out there? I live in Ireland and I've never seen nor heard of one!

You're right, DBT is therapy. However, I was trying to inform her that my counselor is trained to teach DBT. This counselor isn't BPD only, she's just your normal counselor on all issues. Her training in DBT makes her a better choice to turn to for someone with BPD though.

I don't think any counselors would be strictly BPD only. Sorry for the confusion.

I wouldn't know about Ireland at all, I'm in the U.S.
