The people who want to compare people's trauma's just cause a lot of hurt. I've also had a number of people do it, including a therapist.
I don't mind where people say "I've been through something similar, so I kind of understand where you're coming from...", even though it might not exactly feel like it, at least they're being sensitive about it and trying to empathise. But the guy I had who compared bullying experiences with "well, YOU think YOU had it bad..." and proceeded to tell me my experience was nothing compared to his, well he lost me there.
I know it's hard, but try to switch off to them. You do matter and your feeling and problems are important. I do get hurt every single time someone does it to me, but I'm getting better at not letting them keep on doing it over and over.
First rule of mental health: Learn to distinguish who deserves an explanation, who deserves only one answer, and who deserves absolutely nothing.
