Iffy about therapists decision

Postby venome » Tue Mar 28, 2017 12:41 am

I've been worrying about having bpd for the past week, and today I talked to my therapist and showed her a list of BPD symptoms I have. She read them and told me I don't have BPD and moved on to the next subject. She's been the type to not focus on diagnosis but diagnosis means so much to me. I STRONGLY identify with Quiet BPD, and reading about the experiences of those who have it makes me feel like I'm reading about myself. I don't know what to do because I'm not at rest all. I know therapists cant really diagnose disorders, but I dont feel any better. My other therapist told me I dont have Avpd, which i totally accept, but this one bothers me.

Even when it comes to "Professional Psychiatrist" Diagnosis, believe me, they all diagnose differently. The DSM may exist, but I'm almost 30 now, I've been seeking help for mental health since 16, and believe me, each psych will diagnose you differently. Some will think you have BPD, and some won't. I guarantee you that if you "shop around" enough, you will absolutely find a psychiatrist who will diagnose you with BPD.

This will rub some people up the wrong way because people put a lot of trust and faith into the officialdom of psychiatry and correct diagnoses and whatnot, but if you're even averagely self-aware and you relate that much to the symptoms of BPD (which you can just Google), then for all intents and purposes, you have BPD, (or, the current list of attributes which presently make up BPD - it has changed a LOT over the decades: what would grant you a BPD diagnosis wouldn't have granted you one many years ago and vice versa; what constitutes an official diagnosis is the most fallible thing in the world - it's constantly changing and shifting the parameters of what diagnosis means), and therefore you deserve treatment for the things you're going through, for which treatment for BPD targets.

Heck, even if you don't, you can bet money on the fact that there are a ton of wrongly diagnosed people with "BPD", who don't know anything about it, may even DISAGREE with the diagnosis, who are getting treatment for it when they don't even have it.

Persist and you'll get what you need. x

I was convinced about 18 months ago that I had BPD. I kept going to the doctor and he kept disagreeing. Then I saw a counsellor who cousins diagnose but basically thought I didn't have it.

I'd almost forgotten about it until something happened at the end of last year to make me question it again. I'm seeing a therapist who specialises in PDs, completely coincidentally as I was seeing her for other reasons. When I mentioned BPD she did a questionnaire on me and turns out I do have it. She is qualified to diagnose and said she had started to suspect I had one from things I was saying in the past.

So don't give up, if you're sure you have it! I guess at some point you have to just admit defeat if you keep being told no, but hopefully you'll find someone who can diagnose you.

Thank you both so much! It makes me feel better to know your experiences. This clinic tries not to focus on diagnosis and doesn't really specialize in PDs. Maybe their approach just doesn't fit me in that area. It just sucks because I love it there so much. I feel like the cant be wrong, but they can
