Identifying with celebrities or characters ...

Postby ceruleanswan » Wed Jan 04, 2017 2:53 pm

This is potentially embarrassing, but I'll give it a go...

Has anyone here emulated a character from a fictional work, or a celebrity they admire? I've done it, and in hindsight thought it was really silly, but I seem to go from trying to be one person or character to another, like hopping on rocks to get across a stream.

I think it gives me a sense of stability, someone to identify with, and makes it easier to relate to other people if I have a coherent sense of "this is what I am ... for right now", if that makes sense?

If not, that's okay, I was just curious if others with BPD have found themselves doing this.

From what I understand this is common with BPD. Its also common in the early stages of NPD, at least for me. For me when I was younger and still in an abusive environment I scrambled to find some kind of identity to myself. I had to reject the fact that I was who I was and I was subjected to this daily abuse. I tried to emulate people I looked up to or movie characters.

Eventually someone with NPD creates a character in their head that sticks and works with them. Its not a movie character. Its a character they completely fabricate in their head that takes over their physical body. At first I emulated the character and try to follow by doing the same things they would do. After a long enough time just "acting" you start to just become that person. You are one in the same. This is where that false self comes from.

It sounds like your searching for an identity. Maybe your not pleased with your true self and think that if you can walk in the shoes of another person your life will be better? Believe me, I get this. The thing about emulating a movie character is eventually you will be slapped back to reality when you realize your not at all this person in any way. The key is to emulate the perfect form of yourself. You are still yourself, just a much better and more confident self.

i've stopped watching movies and sitcoms. that helped a lot. also i only see animal planet on tv.

there is big risk of emulating movie character. in movies n sitcoms the situations are controlled.
in real life that's not the case.

characters in movies/sitcoms may be promiscuous, drunk driving, murderers and eventually get happy ending but that may not happen in real life.
