Does my mom have borderline personality disorder?

Postby Dinoosaur21256 » Tue Oct 18, 2016 4:45 pm

Which type of personality disorder does my mom have?

She is always criticizing me in everything I do. When I'm job hunting, she would nag at me about how I don't have a job. Then now that I have a job, she continues to find things to pick about my job, my job is a manicurist and she started yelling at me about why I'm working in this job because to her this is a very dirty job as it will require me to touch customers' feet blah blah blah.

My mom never gives out compliments. All she gives out is criticisms after criticisms.

She is also prone to manipulative behavior. Whenever she had an argument with my dad, she will start locking herself in her room and start harming herself. And then after that she would brag to me about how she did that to make my dad apologise to her.

I'm pretty sure she has some form of personality disorder. But which personality disorder does this sound like. Borderline? Narcisstic? Or what?

It would be silly to presume that anybody who acts in an unhealthy way necessarily has a personality disorder. I can't tell if your mother has any disorder at all, you didn't write anywhere near enough to be able to make an educated guess. It's possible that she just plain old hates you, is depressed or something.

None of us can tell you with 100% certainty what your mother may or may not have.

However, you might be interested in reading about parents with NPD, to see what you might identify with from your memories of her throughout your life. You can google things like "narcissistic mother" or "NPD mother" and browse the various articles.

Example:

Then there are also articles that focus more on yourself, and may help give you insight into some damage you have suffered that may need to heal:

Example:

My personal advice for contemplating this sort of thing, is to try to focus more on yourself, how you feel, how you have been treated, how it has affected you, and so on. As opposed to focusing on your mother (what does she have, why does she do what she does, what is she thinking, etc).

The reason for this is because you can have 10 different people who all qualify for the basics of a personality disorder, yet all 10 of them might operate a little differently, have slightly different behaviors, and be the way they are for slightly different reasons. You are not psychic, and so you shouldn't expect yourself to be able to figure it out, about your mother. That wouldn't be fair to you to expect that of yourself.

But you CAN figure yourself out, to a great extent, and work on yourself. And that is what you owe to yourself as a human being. To figure out how you have been affected, how it is currently affecting your life, and in what ways you could be treating yourself better and protecting yourself from malignant people.

You don't need to have a personality disorder to be a negative nancy. Your mom may just suffer from severe depression and is just always negative and unhappy.
Dx: NPD, PTSD
