Does anybody else avoid social media?

Postby peasantgirl » Mon Jun 13, 2016 6:24 pm

I completely reject Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc (I honestly can't even name any more sites because I avoid all aspects of social media). I don't think forums count as true social media, but in any case I RARELY post on them (or any comments platform, for that matter). I'm not exactly sure why I do this, but I can tell you it's partly because 1) Posts on social media often seem like attention-seeking, which really annoys me, and 2) The amount of drama often involved in people's posts is just exhausting.

Or maybe I just resent that my life is so sucky that I never have anything to share? Or is it a manifestation of my desire to hide and not let anybody in? I don't know...

Anyway, I'm just curious if other BPDs can relate?

YES!!! I'm the same. I got off of Twitter and FB in 2013 for the same reason. I'm only on Instagram once every month to check my son's account (he's young).

This is exactly why Im not on it either. It's just too exhausting to see who took a $#%^ and whose eating what or whose life is more fabulous than yours. On that end, I feel like it triggers my BPD so I do chose to steer clear.

Then again, I believe this too. Just recently I went on FB to out of nowhere stalk my bf's ex WTF?? Then found all of my old HS friends who have gone off to do amazing things like become CEO's, buy houses, take lavish vacations. I look at my life and begin to feel so small. Knocking myself down for not finishing college, down on myself for not saving money in my early 20's, down on myself for just having a dead end job and no career. This is how it triggers my BPD into a spiraling depression. Started to feel this last week when I stupidly decided to go back on FB for a second to look at my bf's ex. I closed it off and haven't been back since. I'm fighting hard now to not let other peoples accomplishments and/or bragging get me down.

I don't avoid it however I mainly use facebook to share photos with family out-of-state otherwise I don't have much use for it. I do occasionally like comments, but rarely reply to anyone's comments. It's all very superficial to me and sometimes it seems like a contest in who can collect the most friends. There's no way someone, other than a celebrity, can have 500 + friends.

It's not uncommon for people with bpd to be triggered by social media with, facebook being the worst of the bunch. Seeing others having fun, feeling excluded, and so called friends not commenting on posts. It can lead to impulsiveness, anxiety, depression etc. I'm emotionally distant from everyone and don't place much value in them so facebook doesn't bother me much. Twitter and Instagram seem useless to me. I can't construct a thought with 140 characters. You're definitely not alone though.

The ones that irritate the $#%^ out of me on facebook is when someone feels the need to post the conversation they had with their child, that they find amusing, as their status update, and then reading all the equally stupid replies from their friends. I'm usually left thinking "who the F*ck cares!"

I used Facebook very briefly in its early days, but after a year abandoned it for the same reasons. I have a LinkedIn account for necessity when job searching, but almost never use it. I have Twitter but it's mostly to follow some very specific people who tweet about political and cultural stuff, and it can rile me up for other reasons, so I'm thinking of deleting my account.

I can't even imagine trying to locate people I used to know. It was bad enough just keeping in contact with people with whom I'd gone to postgrad school. I'm in a similar situation.

I stay off the internet most of the time cause I find it tends to make me jealous (when I'm following someone I care for). I use facebook minimally - the few friends I have added are pretty drama free, we just share funny posts and news articles 99% of the time. And then superficial life stuff like stuff we bought or food we ate. If my gf was more active on her facebook account and I got jealous I'd probably just shut mine down because it would drive me nuts.

I do that cause in high school and early uni I was obsessive online. When it was someone I was into, I'd spend hours reading their stuff, looking for signs of abandonment or potential abandonment. I drove myself crazy and it would make me feel physically sick. It honestly isn't worth it. So it's an easy "rule" for myself to follow, because I remember how bad it hurt and how that hurt never got me anywhere in my relationships.
