Comorbid ASD and BPD?

Postby funkenstein91 » Thu Jan 14, 2016 6:22 am

I was diagnosed with Asperger's as a kid (now ASD), and my current PHP treating source believes I am borderline. He stated that all of my symptoms (constant rumination and obsession with one particular person, history of suicide attempts and gestures, fear of abandonment, etc.) fit the BPD listing in the DSM and are best explained by it. He also stated that he just doesn't see the autism, but I believe that this is mostly due to me learning over the years to hide those symptoms, such as stereotypy, to the point that most people think I'm normal until they're around me a lot.

Thoughts? I know disorders like this can co-exist, and hell, maybe the experience of ASD as a child is what caused the BPD to develop, because I never had any sort of trauma in my family and I was never abused, so it had to have been something else, right?

Hi funkenstein :)

Interesting question.

The way i see it is BPD is characterized by lots of instability. Unstable moods, self image, extremes in thinking, etc.

Is that something you can relate to?

I've heard of ASD manifesting itself as BPD like symptoms in women. Sorry if you're a man, as this isn't relevant.

I obsess over certain friends and become suicidal if I perceive rejection from them. I fear abandonment.

Yes, it is possible. In fact, studies suggest that 20% of those with BPD have ASD.

Could you elaborate?

-- Fri Jan 15, 2016 9:11 pm --

i find narcissists to be obnoxious as well, but i get along with the ones who are self aware and not so image-centric.

My father is NPD, i suspect.

madjoe you've always had a distaste for them

if you were to kill someone, would it be a narcissist?

i think narcissists, the delusional ones who need to put down others to feel good, are very toxic.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. The more I'm in treatment, the more I see my patterns and realize that it must be both disorders. I'm making more progress in treatment for both than I ever did for just ASD.
