The Emo Syndrome?

Postby AsinusMaximus » Wed Jan 31, 2007 10:47 pm

On the Internet, considerable discussion has been made about the emo. Emo started out as some kind of music but has evolved into a clique: a way for teenagers to dress and act. Emoism affects males and females approximately equally.

Aside from wearing black glasses engineers of the 1950s would have worn, emo are notorious for writing angst-filled posts to their LiveJournal or other such blog. They may post pictures of themselves slitting their wrists to which they expect all their online friends to respond with sympathy.

They occasionally write suicide notes and then come back to their blog a few days later chipper as ever. They are prone to overreact to everything.

I have never met an emo personally, and based on what I've read about them, I don't want to.

But it sounds a lot like borderline personality disorder, eh?

I think that a lot of people we sort into the "emo" group have borderline personality, major depression, bipolar ect. however borderline personality is a real disorder which is more than just being overemotional. It's something that affects every aspect of a person's life and can lead a person to turmoil.

Adolecence (the stage of development of most "emos") is notorious for borderline-like traits mostly as just as many with BPD have a confused identity adolecents often have a very unstable self-image. This leads many to go into compulsive relationships as if a person doesn't know who she is how can she really know someone else deeply and leads many to go from loving to hating people.

Splitting and projecting are also very common among teenagers just as borderlines. Mood swings are also common in teens as well as depressions and the most common age group of self-injury is in the teen and young adult years and who hasn't met an angry teen?

However in Borderline Personality it crosses a line, interfering with the person's functioning and becoming chronic.

Just my thought,

I used to be the same way. I wouldn't label myself as emo though.

I think emo is just another form of goth in a sense. These kids are just looking for attention. Whether they really need that attention (i.e. actual help) is dependent on that particular person.

Yeah, I'm emo. I have thick black glasses, listen to My Chemical Romance, and cry a lot. Meh. Whatever.

I think with the trend that Emo has become today, it's almost expected of these kids to act out this way. Just to fit in with the "Emo" culture. It's a little distressing that just to get attention this way and form a bond with people in this trend, that they'd go as far as threat suicide and SH when there are people out there more deserving (and I don't mean that in a bad way) of the help that's given, some cases crutial.

I think the emo thing has been overexagerated a little bit. In every generation theres taboos, and crazy contradictions and stuff from the youths. Emo is obviously a trend and in 10yrs time the next generation will have something else.

The whole emo thing has a number of different sides to it. There's the fashion side, the music side, and the lifestyle. Yeah, emo kids are over emotional. That doesn't mean they're necessarily mentally ill, though some of them are. I was one of those emo kids in high school, and I happened to be one of the ones who was actually sick. Go figure.

emo drug

Postby lostmind » Sat Jul 07, 2007 11:49 pm

the emo culture is based on : this Many persons in the world have the tendency to hide their tendencies under other tendencies, this resume Emo’s behavior

As many emos they cut for atention, need atention.
Also they always something to hide making this "dark mood" the direct stimulus for the "elimination" of their problem, they thing that if they become part of the problem they then would "stay in line" whit their problem so this problem would appear normal for them.

Other aspect is the circle of members that integrate the friends of an emo, the music and the mood of this persons are very introspective and that means that they would be only whit others
emos making the perfect place for the develop of bandura's theory of personality. they see other emos "happy" avoiding his problems whit this mood and because of that they would copied that mood.

The problem is when this mood become a crusial part of their lives making it nesesary to become hapy by hiding all this repressed emotions, becoming not only a fashion or philosophy but a drug.

:P :)
