How does DBT help with substance abuse?

Postby Athens » Tue Oct 20, 2015 4:19 pm

I'm not super educated about DBT but I have researched it superficially on the internet and I found a lot of helpful skills that helped me with interpersonal effectiveness ad distress tolerance, but I haven't read anything about substance abuse. I have alcohol problem and although sometimes I drink because I'm in pain most of the time I drink because I want to feel HAPPY and FULFILLED and then when I sober up I feel empty again. When I don't sober up I vomit and cry and sometimes have suicidal thoughts. I promised myself I will stop but I do it again. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything in DBT to help with this?

Helps to control and manage emotions that may lead to substance abuse. Best of luck..

I've experienced the EXACT same thing. If I have a beer or two, I feel happy and giddy. If I binge drink (which I usually end up doing), I vomit, cry, and have suicidal thoughts, and two of those times, my thoughts turned into attempts.

I never really found DBT to be helpful. I just don't drink anymore. When I first stopped, I did have cravings and I missed drinking, but over time, those feelings went away. Don't keep any alcohol in the house and surround yourself with people who don't drink. Good luck!

The goal of distress tolerance is to prevent impulsive behaviors. That's what you need to look at.

The center that I go to for therapy holds a binge-eating group that uses DBT. Same principle.
