small talk?

I can take it or leave it, but I do engage in it. It can definitely be used to gauge how extroverted someone is, but I would be careful in using this to detect how open someone is. It's a skill used to socialize.

or can you have real conversations that are a little more in depth.

I can, but it depends on the subject matter. If I'm not familiar with the subject matter, then I won't be able to and if it bores me, I won't want to.

if you can with who?

anyone willing, and with the same interests

if you can't why?

I'm either not familiar with the subject matter or it bores me.

sounds like something that needs to be thoght in therapy school?

Yes, if the therapy school is located right next door to a bar?

If I really like someone I'll talk about almost anything. Around most people I'm quiet though. I'm not as shy as I am bored. Most of the time small talk leads to a certain point where can't think of anything worthwhile enough to add, or at least nothing worth the effort required to open my mouth and vibrate my vocal cords.

Small talk- I absolutely hate it. But I am also and Avoidant too. So all of their small talk feels like they are prying. I work in a job that covers tourism/retail/hospitality, so small talk is necessary. I just ask them about their holiday. They'll talk for hours about that.

Small talk makes me uncomfortable.. I try to exit the situation ASAP.
When someone attempts to start small talk, I'll give a short answer and provide nothing to continue on. I'm sure some people think I'm rude when I do this, but in reality, I just don't know how to do it..
The times I've attempted to, I usually end up tripping over my words, or drawing blanks in situations that should be fairly simple. I realize later on that I must have seemed pretty awkward or stupid to them..
So now I choose to just opt out and save myself the painful struggle :D

Now, if it's something I'm passionate about, I'm typically fine regardless of who it is I'm talking to.
If it's not something I'm very passionate about but it's at least a deeper conversation or has my interest, I'll ask questions to keep the other talking and the focus off of myself. Depends on the vibe and my mood, I suppose.
The best pace is a suicide pace, and today is a good day to die.
