One of the problems that I've been told by my doctors (GP as well as psychs), is that our problems are response-based. With purely internally-based emotions, such as those with Bipolar experience, it can be more easily (not easily, just more easily) be controlled with medications.
Our issues, on the other hand, are responsive, meaning that though we may overreact by most standards, our changes are generally based on some external stimulus. Medications can help us minimize the impact, but (according to the docs, anyway) won't be able to exert any significant control over things. Therapy's pretty much mandatory for that one.
Like Amorous, I've found that the stuff I'm on tends to numb me to a degree, almost cast a "haze" over everything. I may not get as sad, but I also don't get nearly as happy, so it's certainly a trade-off.
