Bipolar and BPD

Postby BrotherBadger » Thu Dec 11, 2014 5:21 pm

I've never posted on this forum before but I felt that this thread belonged here. I've been between psychs trying to figure out what the hell is wrong but have come up with little. They said that there is a good chance that I have BP but didn't want to give an official diagnoses. I was administered a questionnaire one time that said I showed the symptoms of BPD. Immediately I just wrote it off as an unreliable result from a faulty quiz but as I reflected on the symptoms I experience it sort of made sense.

I have no history of child abuse and I understand that is the main cause of BPD. But one day I came across something called the Bipolar BPD "Scar Hypothesis". Some researchers believe that early-onset Bipolar Disorder(child/adolescent years) can disrupt personality development and leave a "scar" causing BPD. There isn't much evidence to prove it but it makes sense. I've noticed that many people on the bipolar forum have BPD and it seems logical.

I guess I'm just looking for your guys' thoughts and opinions.

Not everyone who has BPD was abused as a child. People who have suffered abuse are just more at risk of developing it.

That hypothesis is BS. They are two different disorders and can be co-morbid. Also PwBPD have different brains abnormalities than PwBP. They are related to some extent genetically- people with BPD are more likely to have bipolar relatives (I have 2)- but BPD is in no way caused by bipolar.

There are a lot of theories that go around about what causes BPD. I personally think BPD is simply a myriad of symptoms lazily grouped together to describe the combination of biological emotional dysregulation and an invalidating environment during development that leads to harmful coping strategies.
