residential treatment

Postby IncredibleHulk » Thu Jul 10, 2014 6:51 pm

My dr and therapist want to send me to residential treatment and I'm really freaked out about it.

Has anyone been? what's it like? does it work?

When I was going through some of my worst times with BPD residential treatment wasn't available. I am aware of a place now that does do residential treatment though and I would jump on it in a heartbeat if I was still struggling in the way I used to and given the chance. I know there is a lot of stigma around residential treatment, but the only thing I would say, is to grab hold of that opportunity as hard as you can and think of it as a stepping stone vs a lifelong sentence. There are so many people on this board and around the world in general who can't even get access to a DBT trained therapist or support group, never mind this type of specific, intensive treatment.

I, too, would jump at the chance to have a stint in residential treatment. Money issues prevent me from going, mostly, although my DBT therapist says there's no evidence residential treatment helps with BPD more than intensive outpatient DBT therapy. So she won't refer me. Consider yourself fortunate to be presented with this opportunity and that you have support for it.

If you are being offered it, take it. You are being offered a chance to have a better life, I would jump at it. Most people have to fight for scraps of mediocre treatment. Yes it is scary and I'm sure it won't be easy, but change never is. But it is an amazing opportunity.
