I've heard a lot on here about paranoid thinking .... but do any of you have audio or visual hallucinations? And how long do these episodes last??

Hallucinations? Only with REM disturbances, from poor/non-existent sleep schedules.

Hi Who38,

Yes I do, I have hallucinations that are mainly visual and some audio. It tends to be worse if I'm very stressed and will often run alongside a dissociative episode aswell. Generally the hallucination will last from a few minutes to an hour and it comes in waves, so I may have a week when it happens a lot then nothing for a couple of weeks.

^Thanks Thompson99.
I don't know what happened to me. I just woke up one day and started going really crazy
Visual hallucinations that lasted hours and hours.
I see a doctor every couple months but I don't talk to him really and he just prescribes me antipsychotics.

You had visual hallucinations but you could tell the difference between real and not real?

Was it accompanied by any special or intense emotional state?

Did it started happening and it went away, with the same dosage and schedule of antipsychotics?

Brief visual or auditory hallucinations are very common in BPD, I think. Howeber, you said you didn't sleep for two weeks straight? If this is literal, it could be a sign of something more on the mania side, and maybe you could benefit from mood stabilizers as well.

What antipsychotic do you take, btw?

Yeah it can be pretty scary, its worth talking about if you can. I don't take anything for it but I have found that talking about it actually made it slightly better, probably because I was less anxious about it happening

Hi there, I get audio and visual hallucinations lasting anything from a split second to several days. I had a time last year I heard voices for about 10 days straight, but that's pretty rare for me. Generally I will have multiple (sometimes nearly constant) brief mainly visual hallucinations, during a period of stress/high anxiety. So yes I guess that might be similar to what you're saying about it lasting hours and hours, if by that you mean you see one thing then another then another, constantly over time, rather than the same thing being there for several hours?

It's quite common I believe after speaking to professionals.

I have paranoid episodes as well as hear voices. These generally are in times of severe anxiety, stress, or anger. It worries me that I will act out on the voices as they come from other people. I take 10mg of Olanzapine which has really dampened down both symptoms. However, I've put on weight which isn't ideal. Oh well, my quality of life is better.
