Do you have trauma and/or abuse in your past? (trigger?)

Postby dejamelie » Tue Dec 03, 2013 7:37 pm

For those diagnosed with BPD, do you have trauma and/or abuse in your past? Or did you have a relatively happy/uneventful childhood?

Abuse could include things that happened inside the family home or at school, etc.
Trauma could include one event (eg, rape) or reoccurring events (eg, sexual abuse by a family member).
Physical neglect might include not receiving enough food or shelter as a child.
Emotional neglect might include not having parents express love to you, or being left alone for many hours during the day.

I am interested in how I became the way I am, and thought it could be interesting to see what everyone elses pasts were like.

Most of my trauma is emotionally related. I was spanked and had my hair pulled by my mom when I was a kid, but I think that's normal..

Yes, I suffered from severe neglect and a lot of verbal abuse. I just hate calling it abuse because none of the abusers were doing it consciously to hurt me. They were just trying their hardest to live their lives but I fell through the cracks. I's sad how life hurts people though. :(

yes. I was emotionally and physically neglected by my parents, and bullied from a young age. then I also found myself in an emotionally/mentally/physically abusive relationship beginning at age 18, which last 4 1/2 years.

My mother walked out when I was 16. And I was raped when I was 24. Up until a violent flashback in a gyne's rooms last year I thought I had asked for it so it was never reported. I still don't know what influenced what. Only my psych and the counselor who diagnosed me as borderline know.
I only speak to my mother once a year.

Sexual abuse or trauma plus emotional neglect (and conditional love)

Yes. I don't want to post exact details, because it might trigger someone. My abuse was not extreme abuse. But nonetheless, it was abuse. My father is mentally unstable (I'm convinced that he is a high functioning BPD) and I watched him abuse my brother. I was also abused by him. The abuse was a combination of mental and physical. The best way I can describe it is constant bullying.

Hm...I was both emotionally and physically abused...but I don't know which one caused by BPD. Perhaps my mom also had BPD...and growing up with her may have affected it or..to be honest..I'm not sure....if it was due to the abuse or I was genetically prone to having BPD.

Either way, My BPD has improved a lot when I moved away from my mom. So maybe there is something that has to do with my mom the way that I am. Every time, I'm in an intimate relationship with someone or I am with a counselor or therapist my mom is always brought up. Mostly, blaming and complaining and things I've been through with her. And sometimes I see myself doing similar things or sometimes even worse to my partners that my mom has done to me. It is as if I'm repeating the same pattern of relationship that I had with my mom but I become the mom. Or maybe I'm just venting out anger towards my partner that I have with my mom. Fortunately, I'm opposite with my son. I am super protective or be careful of how I am with my son due to bad relationship I had with my parents.

I guess in a sense whenever I have an intimate relationship, it becomes the trigger????
