How long before seeing any real DBT in individual counseling

Postby NeedyPants » Fri Nov 22, 2013 5:12 am

Have had a session each week for a month and so far only covered my past and started working on a timeline. This therapist charges $120/he, though I am getting a low income discount. I am starting to feel tired off because we haven't gotten ANYWHERE close to actual DBT. She keeps saying, "next session, we'll start covering DBT." I don't need talk therapy, I need to change my life. I already have people to vent to. I told her this in the beginning and yet I don't feel like I'm going to see results any time soon. She also has not encouraged me to join a DBT group. While I don't think she is anywhere near an expert, she is the only counselor in my area who uses DBT. I don't want to keep paying her and wasting my time. I know recovery time various with each person, but can you all share about how long it took before actual THERAPY took place in your sessions? She always expect me to talk right away too so the beginning of our appointments are awkward, because I would think the therapist would know how to start things off.
It is my goal to define myself by my actions, not by my labels.

I think it is dependant on the individual therapist, but I would think that someone who specializes in a certain kind of therapy should be using it. My therapist started teaching some DBT stuff pretty early on, she is not a DBT specialist though. If you are not getting what you want and need from this person maybe try the DBT group.
The darkness inside is all consuming.
