Self Harming Behaviours

Postby whenlmeetsm » Thu Nov 21, 2013 2:47 pm

I was reading an article last night that discussed self harming behaviour. It listed that the self harming behaviours most often linked to BPD are cutting, burning, hitting, head banging, hair pulling, and other harmful acts. That these behaviours are to help regulate their emotions, to punish themselves, or to express their pain.

I'm a little confused because other sources have listing smoking, drug abuse, reckless or unprotected sex, gambling, shopping sprees, etc as self harming behaviours.

Are there two distinct categories here?
