Strong Emotional Reaction to celebrities, why?

Postby SwimmingBird » Fri Aug 16, 2013 2:07 am

I don't quite understand this:

I know girls go crazy over lot's of bands and get really emotional but it seems like some bands and celebrities get it more, does anyone know the psychological term for this and what causes it?

It's effective marketing.

Using your example, you also have to remember who is being targeted, and how. You take a young, good looking teenage male who can sing and dance, give him some sexy songs that are a little dirtier than "I wanna hold your hand" but not as dirty as "I wanna f*** you like an animal*", and put him in an A&F shirt or a shiny black leather jacket to give him that "bad boy with a soft side" persona. Then market him where pre- and young teenage girls, girls whose hormones have just kicked into a massive state of overdrive, will see him (hearing him is almost secondary), and voilà! You have a celebrity crush.

The marketing company creates this attraction. They target the right people and give them the right triggers to create the emotions in order to create this fanaticism. It makes for a whole mob of people out there who will buy anything with Justin's face on it, no matter what the cost. Marketing/brainwashing at its finest.

Bieber is far from the first to use this approach. Steve Tyler, any hair band in the 80's, the Rolling Stones, and of course, the king of instant sex appeal, Elvis Presley. He didn't wear those jumpsuits with the Don Cherry collars because they were comfy!

The corollary would be a self-esteem company marketing to BPD's. You find a known weakness and exploit it. In this case, it happens to be hormones.

This I think.

Though my agreement is only based on observation coming from a person who prides them self on being mostly immune to advertising (except for the obvious "this product exists, here are its merits" factor) lol.

Don Cherry! I remember his half hour show Don Cherry's Grapevine that first aired on my hometown's TV station. And his dog Blue, of course. Very flamboyant dresser....Don...not the dog...

I've never reached that fever pitch of emotion with respect to celebrities/musicians, although I do recall being on the verge of tears when I met Matthew Good after one of his acoustic shows (it was right after he released the album Hospital Music and it hit home), yet if you run his name by the average teen they'll be clueless.

I remember when Duran Duran came out my best friend at the time was determined to marry Nick Rhodes and when she found out he was engaged she literally cried for days....meanwhile, I was wearing spiked wristbands and listening to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden wondering if Nick and his bride to be were going to wear matching make up at their wedding. I didn't get it.

Okay. I will admit to being obsessed with Donny and Marie Osmond as a kid....I watched their tv show religiously and even had the Donny and Marie dolls, to boot.

*Sigh*...Donny Osmond....my first celebrity crush.....

And there's another Canadian! Only a fellow Canuck would go so far as to remember Blue from a Grapes reference. I expected most people to be wondering which band Don Cherry sang with.

And yeah, try as we might, we've all had our celebrity crushes. Like it or not, sex sells. After all, Pam Anderson didn't have a high paying contract because running barefoot on a beach was such a difficult skill! Personally, I was always more of a Sports Illustrated, Cindy Crawford/Kathy Ireland kinda guy, but that's beside the point.

Ha! If I'm not mistaken the outspoken fellow actually did the talk show from a sportsbar in my fair city for a while.....and what Canadian can forget this commercial?

"Pink is tough! Just like a real Canadian!"

And I have to agree with you on good ole Pammy. She was drop dead GORGEOUS when she was first discovered and started appearing in commercials ages ago...all natural and just beautiful. Looking at her now it's hard to believe at one time she looked like the girl next door. And who am I kidding? I've had more than one celeb crush. Actor Gael Garcia Bernal, Eddie Vedder, Trent Reznor ( that's been long standing since PHM. Kinda like older ladies and Tom Jones. Or Elvis. The Reznor crush will never go away.) :)

Oh. And Stephen Colbert. It's worse now since seeing him dance to Daft Punk's "Get Lucky". Didn't know the guy had such slick dance moves.

Celebrity worship, manufactured images, marketing ploys, gimmicks, shock value, it's all that and more. Basically mostly teenagers get caught up in that, sure there are exceptions. But you know what? No matter how well they were manufactured and marketed for sex appeal, they all get old and sad looking.
You've stolen my heart, but that's okay because I have three more back home in the freezer!
