hey curious question

Postby msangeedepp » Fri Apr 26, 2013 4:34 am

my psychology of personality class just made me take the Myers Briggs test for like the umpteenth ######6 time..and I started to wonder..

Can BPD's be extroverts? As I think of it, I dont see where that can be possible

I believe there are different expressions of BPD in people depending on if their core self is more introvert or more extrovert. It can create just as many differences in expression of personality and of disorder traits for people with BPD as it would for any individual BPD or not. What were your thoughts though as to why it doesn't seem possible?

well BPDs are pone to depression..

I know from research that extroverts recharge with many people...I cant say all BPDs feel like this but it doesnt seem to me, that a BPD would feel adequate in a room full of people

based on Costas five factor model for personality...people who are extroverts are ethusiastic, cheerful, assertative, and talkative..Now TOME ON! have you known a BPD to be like that unless its a total act they put on, I dont believe thats possible to a BPD's core self

Introverts are overstimulated in large groups, and often engage in solitary creative activities..It just seems to fit..

I can even see where a BPD might be ambiversion but not an extrovert..Now I know not every psychologists theory is 100 percent sound..its more like what are they all saying collectively before you come to an answer..but a extroverted BPD isnt possible

yah I can see where the HPD can bring out extrovert traits but I dont think most BPDs are..

That brings up another question..can extroverts have mental illness? I have always seen them with larger than life qualities..I mean I suppose its possible

Yeah I'd say extroverts can have mental illness just like introverts. Are larger than life qualities not just as delusional as smaller than life qualities for most people? I've heard psychologist use the phrases in either case as "someone acting lesser than human or more than human". Everyone introvert or extrovert has aspects in their personality where they act more lesser than or greater than but perhaps they lean more often to the one or the other? In both cases though they are not being true to their own humanity. I could see where you could get your hypothesis from though on pwBPD not being able to be extroverts. I guess I could hypothesize that to me it doesn't seem like personality disorders are a true aspect of a persons core self while extrovert, introvert would be something that could be defined as a core trait. Maybe in the case of a pwBPD their BPD could cause them to disown their extroverted true self until they can recover perhaps? I think it's difficult to say for sure though. I had a personality disorder in the past even though it wasn't borderline, but with that experience I can still see the affects a personality disorder can have on someones ability to see their own core traits clearly. Depression can stunt extrovert qualities in an extrovert too I think. So the person may never have a drive for or notice their extrovert side until they cure their depression I would guess. Depression in itself though isn't something in my mind that could be defined as a core trait in any person. It's simply a disorder.

I love that test! I am INFP, the Idealist, Healer.. I can be talkative though.. And cheerful.. I think though, that all personalities can change, be fluid, I don't think they're static..
Udx BPD.. INFP (lol).. Emotional wreck..
