Alternatives to medications?

Postby noreally_imfine » Tue Apr 23, 2013 11:58 pm

Hey guys!

Since I'm new here, I feel like I'm going to be posting a lot of separate posts!

So, my therapists and psychiatrist always recommend some type of antidepressant for me to handle my BPD. Well, I've tried two in the past, sertraline (zoloft) and wellbutrin. both gave me the same side effect that ultimately made me get off.

Sertraline was for anxiety and it helped!!! Killed my libido though in all kinds of ways. Never wanted sex, was bored when I was having it and couldn't orgasm.

Wellbutrin, we all know, is SUPPOSED to help with sex drive maybe even INCREASE it. Nope, didn't do it for me. It also gave me sexual dysfunction.

Sex is too important for me to risk. And I've read in sooo many articles on the web that lots of these cause sexual dysfunction. PLEASE NO ONE ON HERE THINK IM DISCOURAGING PEOPLE FROM TAKING ANTI D's, SOME DO WORK! but for me, personally, its just not worth it with the side effects I get.

Then I saw online a book called The Depression Cure: a 6 step program on how to beat it.

The author is a clinical psychologist and university professor. I read that he gives an alternative to medication because he believes it only has a 50% success rate and you often get one of these side effects:emotional numbing, sexual dysfunction and weight gain.

He recommends these alternatives: Take 1,500mg of omega-3 daily (in the form of fish oil capsules), with a multivitamin and 500mg vitamin C. Along with other necessary things like a certain amount of time outdoors, exercise activity in social interactions with others.

Im trying out the supplements that he recommended. i started it today. However I'm taking fish oil in liquid form instead of capsules. hope that doesn't matter.

Sorry i made this so long! Does anyone else use some alternative to medications?

This thread was created in the anti-psych forum a little while ago. It has some good ideas for alternatives that aren't necessarily pill related.

Since this was posted in the anti-psych forum, please be mindful that it may be triggering to some people.

I'd strongly suggest DBT, its helped me alot so far. It's designed to help people with BPD.
