OCD & BPD

Postby Ophelia333 » Wed Mar 06, 2013 10:20 pm

General wonderingment, I suffer with OCD quite badly, I was curious as to wether this is common in those with BPD? I should probs clarify I do have BPD... just wanted to know if they were intertwined in any way :/

Short and sweet :)

Afraid i hve no idea, all i can do is speak from personal experience.

I used to be very OCD but over a period of a number of years i managed to to sort of train, or systematically get rid of almost all these traits. I found once i started getting rid of them it got easier and easier. I don't know about you but with OCD traits i always used to convince myself that if i didn't follow these OCD rituals then something very bad was going to happen because i failed to follow them. To start with i just got rid of a few select OCD rituals and waited for the results. Of course nothing bad happened because it's all in our heads, we know it is all along but we convince ourselves otherwise. After this i started to dispense with more and more OCD rituals and it just kept getting easier because the bad consequences that i had convinced myself would happen if i didn't follow them of course never happened.

The BPD has been more difficult to treat by a long way and that's still on going, i'm making progress, lots of progress so i keep going. I'm not sure what my overall point is other than to say i think the OCD is probably more easily treatable than BPD, unless you have one of those really severe cases. I think maybe BPD is a fault in the workings of our brain wheras OCD is more a fault in the way we use our brains, we can fix this if we have courage and face it head on. Now please don't think i'm trying to belittle OCD sufferers and their condition, it affected me for years. I'm just trying to suggest ways to fight it. Good luck.

My OCD stems from paranoia which for me, is a massive part of being BPD. And to be honest, the worse I am feeling emotionally, the more intense and frequent the OCD behaviours become. But I guess that's to be expected really!

0RH1 I think you're right in saying the OCD is more treatable than BPD, it definitely would be for me anyway. I am going to attempt to follow your example and try and reduce the rituals. I haven't really put much effort into changing that behaviour in the past but it has been escalating more over time and I do need to do something about it. It's effecting my day to day life more than ever.

Also, I am wondering if trichotillomania is classed as another aspect of OCD because I have this as well, and this is definitely something I really want to stop.

I'm sure I couldn't be diagnosed with OCD, but I do have some compulsive behaviors... like dermatillomania. I remember reading somewhere about this sort of thing occurring with BPD. Personally, stress triggers me and this and other compulsive type behavior make me stop thinking about and feeling whatever is bothering me.

I also have both. Fun, isn't it? I'm probably really hard to be around. I've wondered myself if it is common. Glad I'm not alone ; I sympathize with you,

in my personal experience, it seems to be a very common combo.
