What does a psych assessment consist of?

Postby seagreen497 » Mon Nov 05, 2012 9:38 pm

I've got my psych assessment tomorrow and I'm really anxious, what do these things consist of?
I hope it doesn't go into depth and also taken my current mood into account. I've just come on a "high" and I'm about to go jig around the room for a bit. Considering I've been on a downer all week, I don't want to go in there tomorrow like yup I'm all hunky dory...
So if any of you have been to one before please let me know what you discuss/is involved? Pleeeease!

It's really by the book. They ask you questions and then you answer them. It isn't very in depth, at least mine wasn't. It lasted maybe 10 minutes. They ask you questions pertaining to a long length of time, not you're current mood. They're just trying to see if you fit into the diagnostic criteria for a BPD diagnoses. Honestly, it's so cold and disconcerting that it really seems like anyone could walk into a psychiatrists office and just lie and get whatever diagnosis they wanted.

Well my experience seems to be very very different. I didn't take any kind of written test at all. It only took my like 15 minutes with my psychiatrist. He asked really specific questions and I answered them and then he said his official diagnosis was BPD. A 3 hour test sounds really irritating.

It was very irritating. They asked alot of questions. By the end I was so tired and drained. Then got a diagnosis of BPD. had to then see another person like a week later for confirmation and got the comorbidiy of bipolar. second visit wasn't as long but still more questions.

Mine was a few hours with two psychiatrists asking me every question I could imagine (as well as a few I couldn't), followed by a take home questionnaire, followed by a diagnosis of BPD and AvPD.

Like Alixnzaine, I felt completely f***ing drained at the end of it; the analogy that came to mind at the time (and the one that still sticks in my mind now) is "ten rounds with Tyson." My legs were wobbly, I could barely hold my head up, and crossing the street to get back to the car, let alone driving home, was a chore. They were nice and friendly, don't get me wrong, but I still felt beat down.

Hi there,
So I actually took my first one today it was like 120 questions or so and strangely it was online. The questions were in a like "I never feel like this", "sometimes feel like this" etc. This was just general intake not anything specific, yet at least... the questions dealt with body image, family, suicidal thoughts etc kind of all over the board. So hopefully that helps you, I'm terrified to actually speak to someone about my answers but we're looking to be helped so I guess we have to take that step. Best of luck, please post your experience if you want to, I'd like to know what yours was like. :D

I've had a similar thing before with a psychologist, who couldn't diagnose me but said it was highly likely I had BPD, she would get her manager to review her notes to make the call... I never heard back from them.
The assessment I had this week was absolute crap, it was with a "nurse" who just made very generic statements like "you have a mood disorder" and tried to fob me off to group therapy where I can "talk to people like me" trying to get the "what am I?" out of her was difficult as she didn't know - but of course she's a healthcare professional and can't say I don't know. I just said how can you treat me if you don't know what's wrong with me? *had a little paddy whack - about the service and lack of a diagnosis and treatment* I now have to see a psychiatrist for a "final" diagnosis and a treatment plan next week. The joys!

Let just say my experience wasn't great I don't think I've ever wanted to strangle someone, but her I do wish to strangle... #######4 is one thing, but doing it with my health is another. The whole experience has kept me in a distrustful and bad mood with people. I hate everyone lol

Losing faith and my marbles going down this path!
