Treating people differently based on their job/position..

Permanent Linkby seabreezeblue on Sun May 15, 2016 5:06 pm

Just a thought really - and it's always confused me.

Why do we (as a society) treat people differently based on what they do/what type of job they have?

I mean.. perhaps my thinking is a little different to that of others (oh.. hey aspergers.. how are you? ) but i don't understand.

I was reading an article today about a teenaged boy that was permanently excluded from school for punching a teacher.. the police were also called and he was arrested..
why did he get permanently excluded? why were the police called? :?
This in England.. 2016 - where teens bully other teens every single day.. where teens punch, kick, spit at, slap and do the most horrible things to other teens every single day at school..
yet you hardly ever see any of those get much more than a single detention and a phone call home (if even that..) -

So.. i just don't understand it..

why just because it's a teacher it happens to is the reaction completely different?
You could argue that the teacher has a right to be safe at work.. but so does the child have a right to be safe at school.

same as the police - if someone hits them it's really serious and they get a heavier sentence than if they'd hit someone that wasn't a police officer.. why?

Surely the punishment should fit the crime.. not be tailored for who the victim was.. :|

This is actually a very good point and something that I despise about society. People are not treated fairly, they are wrongfully glorified and demonized due to the circumstances surrounding them.

However it is a little different with the teacher situation though. Gotta look at it from a different stand point, if a child punches another kid then it is "socially acceptable" for the kid who got punched to punch back. They get in a scuffle and they get suspended one or two days if someone reports it. However If a kid punches a teacher, then that teacher can't punch back the child, he/she is much older than them, and the act of an adult fighting a child is "socially un-acceptable". So the teacher calls the police, and the school then decides to have him expelled to send a message to the other kids that they cannot get away with punching teachers. It's just the proper way to handle these scenarios, a way to set the balance so to speak. If the teacher had hit the child back then he/she would have lost their job and the kid may not have been expelled. This was the only possible solution to the problem.

However I myself am continuously baffled as to how things come to be "socially acceptable/unacceptable", and often see some things that society thinks as acceptable to be completely immoral and unjust. It's very hard to understand and i still don't agree with the way many situations are dealt with. A man can get away with a murder while driving drunk if he has enough money or has a good lawyer, but if an ex-convict or someone in a lesser position in society does it, then they are sent to life in prison. It's something I can't wrap my head around really..

Thanks you two (:

Retsilloh.. see, that's the problem - the kid isn't actually allowed to hit the other one back - they get punished for that at schools. Usually the kid being hit isn't as strong as the one doing the hitting either and doesn't have much chance of hitting back.
calling the police is definitely the only solution to the problem but why is that not the solution when the kid punches the other kid?
If you call the police because your kid got punched by another kid within the school grounds (or outside of them as long as they're in uniform) - the police say that it's not up to them to deal with.. it's entirely up to the school to take appropriate action.
The system is broken..

I agree - how things come to be socially acceptable/unacceptable is baffling. Your example of a well positioned man being able to get away with that crime, while someone lower down the social ladder would be imprisoned = utterly absurd.
I would have thought that in this time of supposed ''equality'' - things would have started changing properly - but i'm really not seeing that happening very much.

Snags.. absolutely (:

Supposed equality? Oh hell no. Money talks, and #######4 walks, now more than ever.

Yeah I sure do miss the days before zero tolerance- when I was in high school I had a vocational class that was all boys and took up half my school day- Old school male teachers. Two boys get in a fight, yeah they'd get sent to the principle- after they'd worn themselves out a bit. Teachers weren't stupid- let them scuffle a few minutes and wear themselves out, THEN go in and break it up..... no one ever got hurt. And this was before carrying a penknife got you arrested. We all had pocket knives, Chinese throwing stars, etc., in our pockets. Shock, horror!
