Many people who have lived to full adulthood has at least heard of a stalker. The unfortunate fact is that it is much more common than believed to be stalked. To the people who have never been stalked, consider yourself fortunate. It is a scary thing to go through. It really is life changing.
There are a few different types of stalkers. A lot of them act based on some (twisted) notion of romance. Many cases of stalking involves ex-lovers. However, there are a good number of people being stalked by acquaintances, and even strangers.
Some of the common stalkers are erotomaniacs, love obsessional, and simple obsessional. There is a commonality among these types is that the stalkers are fixated on their target. However, there are fundamental differences among all three. The erotomaniac believes that the target is actually in love with the stalker. The love obsessed stalker tries to gain the love of his target. The simple obsessed stalker stalks someone who was in a previous relationship with the stalker.
The sad fact is that since people are only recently looking into this problem, there is not much advice on how to deal with stalkers. The best advice to give is to drop all contact. Unfortunately, this is much easier said than done, especially if the stalker shows up at every place the target goes. In this case, the target would have to look for alternatives, which can be hard to find. Every alternative has an equal chance of working against the target. Restraining orders and stuff like that are nothing for the stalker. It may only aggravate him and cause him to lash out. A lot of these predators never give up on their target. In some cases, it results in the death of the target.
Common traits of stalkers are that they are loners, highly intelligent, poor social skills, and they often show signs of paranoia. Unfortunately, anyone can turn out to be a stalker. There are signs to look out for. Pay attention to body language. Also, another sign is if the person shows some kind of fixation on you.
