Mr. M's Blog Introduction
Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to come and visit me here.

Well as this is a blog I better tell you a little about me... I am a 30+ y/o chap from the UK. I have worked as a public health professional in healthcare and mental health law for a number of years now and have dealt with over a thousand cases. I do genuinely love helping people and making a difference, studying mental health and contributing to the subject.

My training is in law with my post graduate degrees in law and more law with a focus on medical law. I was invited to accept Fellowship to a Royal Society in 2010 and now consult on a freelance basis, offering my services to the NHS and UK patients on a private fee paying basis.

What I generally do not wear on my sleeve is that whilst at the University of Oxford I suffered my own fair share of mental health issues, but was able to overcome these with the help of medical professionals, sheer determination and a 5mg/day dose of Olanzapine (only for a couple of weeks - worked for me). Hopefully my first hand experience of these gives me more of an understanding and an insight to help me provide a better service. Like I say though, in RL I do not tend to share that I have had first hand experience with mental health issues (bi-polar and autistic spectrum disorder) because of the prejudice and intolerance which I am sad to say still exists in the population. Such is the taboo of mental health.

I now keep a pack of 7.5mg Zopiclone in my first aid box in case of sleeping problems but have not needed to take any in quite a few years, nonetheless they are there if I need. Lack of sleep was a real trigger for me, I did not sleep for three days and this was enough to cause a problem.

I am happy to say I have been symptom free for several years now, and I do not take any medication regularly.

In my social circle I have many friends who are highly intelligent and interesting people who have also had there share of issues. Some of the most intelligent and brightest people I know have mental health issues. Some of the most boring people I know admit to none.

That said it has not all been plain sailing and whilst I hope I have made a difference to many peoples lives, there are those I could not or did not help. I lost a close friend this year to depression and I did not see it coming. Some expert huh.

I would implore anyone who is experiencing significant symptoms to ask for help. A GP can be a good starting point, as can organisations (in the UK) such as MIND or the Samaritans. Ideally I would not like to see anyone else suffering with mental health issues, and I certainly do not ever want to see any more deaths. Practically the real world is such that there are many of us who suffer, all too often in silence but I believe that if we all help our fellow man with compassion and understanding we can all make a difference and who knows perhaps it could be you who has that really positive effect on someone's life.

Talmud states "that he who saves a life saves all of a world" but "he who destroys a life destroys all of a world". I would like to save a world and hope you would too Reader, sometimes something as simple as a kind word or a friendly ear can make the difference.

So that is my story, and my fight. Thanks for listening! :)
