Dialectical Behavior Therapy(DBT)

Postby Syvire » Tue May 18, 2010 3:25 am

Something that has really helped me is Dialectical Behavior Therapy or DBT. It is group therapy for all kinds of people- Bipolars, alchoholics, people with borderline personality disorder, etc. I think it should be a class requirement for everyone in junior high or high school because it teaches you skills for coping with life. They teach distress tolerance, healthful choices, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. This is a skill set that everyone should have. It teaches you that you have much more control over your symptoms and emotions than you realize. I now know that while my symptoms may pop up I have a choice as to whether or not I will participate in them and nurture them or to choose to combat them with skills such as self soothe or distract. Using this skill has lessened the impact of my symptoms and sometimes completely defeated them. This isn't a cure. You will still go through ups and downs, but you will have these skills to bring to bear against it and you will have more control of the symptoms that do arise. Visit this web site for more info.

I was never one for that kind of therapy.
Anything that isn't me just talking to a shrink is too much for me.

I'm just that way, I guess.
