It's working out great for me.
Be it:
- Zen (observing the thoughts with detachment so you can be free from attachment to your negative feelings and ego)
- Mindfulness (focusing on breath when the mind wanders, which causes calm and relaxing)
- Vipassana (this one is especially good for mental health, but very intense and can be overwhelming to beginners, because it attacks the negative thoughts with sheer force).
As you see, all of them have roots in Buddhism, except for Mindfulness which is more of a western-adapted kind of meditation. But you don't need to be Buddhist to practice them. Annd Mindfulness is very effective to make you calm if you want something even more detached from religious roots.
I hope you don't consider it to be an anti-psych thread or something along this lines.
It's just a method that's doing great for me. Better than medications I would say, because it increases awareness around you instead of make you "felling like wrapped in cotton". I thought this could help you people.

I can also post links from some articles talking about the effectiveness of meditation for bipolar disorder if you want.
