Looking for good therapist in new york city

Postby silverbell » Fri Jan 06, 2006 11:50 pm

I believe that I have AvPD and I'm sick of feeling like the crap of the earth all the time and constantly pushing potential friends and opportunities away and not following my true desires throughout my entire life. It's torture being in my head and so I want to get out so to speak and move on with my life. I remember pretty much always feeling like this, even as a child and I always thought things will get better, one day I'm going to blossom. But as I get older I see how much I'm becoing more and more reclusive and depressed. With the new year here and my birthday just around the corner, I want nothing more than to make serious changes and tackle these problems head on for a change. I know an important step is finding a good therapist whom I can truly trust. If you have recommendations for a really great therapist in new york city please let me know...

I don't live in NY....I don't have any recommendations. But my suggestion to you is to pull out the yellow pages....ok ok...I realize I live in this nice small town....when I do this...I have maybe 5 clinics or so to pick from and I'm sure in a city the size you live in.....choices will be endless......well there are a couple things you can do...................when searching your local listings....and find someone you want to call ...make sure it's someone that specializes in what you are dealing w/....or feel you are dealing w/. There are many out there that specialize in a very broad array of mental health illnesses.....sometimes I feel a person gets better counseling if they work w/ someone who's majority of cases and education relays to why they specifically came in.

another avenue you can take is to schedule an appt. w/ your family dr. or even just give them a call.....discuss your concerns w/ him or her and ask if they can recommend anyone to you.

I felt the same way, ever since I was a toddler. My family doesn't hesitate to comment on how I've never changed since I was in diapers.

I live in new york but I've always been too scared to see a therapist. Sorry I can't help you, but good luck. I too am striving to one day rid myself of these issues.

Sunny days wouldn't be special, if it wasn't for rain.
Joy wouldn't feel so good, if it wasn't for pain.
Death gotta be easy, 'cause life is hard.
It'll leave you physically, mentally, and emotionally scarred.

There must be tons of therapists to choose from in NYC. Find one who is familiar with cognitave behavioral therapy. That is the best thing for anxiety problems. I think so anyway. It's too bad I'm a bit too far north. I'd love to visit NYC, but it's a 6 hour drive - a bit outside of my range.
