Questions for Avoidants

Postby AnnaRingside » Sat Jul 23, 2005 4:07 pm

I don't know if I have Avoidant or not. I've only ever had a few friends my whole life and now it's really getting to me. Since moving away from my old city I fell out of touch with my friends mostly because I stopped calling them. :( I'm just socially inept I don't really know where it comes from. I guess I'll have to go to a psychologist to see if I have it or not.

I had a few questions for the already diagnosed.

Does your therapy provide you with a "group" (meaning a group of people with AVPD)?
Do you have to talk in your group?
Is part of your therapy learning to socialize?
Are there medications you take for Avoidant?

That's all I can think of now

Do you have to talk in your group? No group.

Is part of your therapy learning to socialize? No, my own therapy consists of trying to emulate other peoples body language and that will make me likable. It's a long shot!

Are there medications you take for Avoidant? No.

Groups don't work for avoidants because we are hopeless with other people.

Wish I could be apart of a group. Anythings better than my boring life. I wish I had some weed, haven't had any in a few years... Made me feel mellow and not think about stuff like this.

My therapist told me there are groups, but the people in them are not my age. I'd rather be in a group where people are about the same age as I am.

Is part of your therapy learning to socialize?

Yes, sort of. Part of the stuff I have to do with it going out and doing stuff. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy if you want to find out more about it

Are there medications you take for Avoidant?

I was hesitant at first about taking medicine, but I thought it should be part of my therapy. I'm taking Prozac right now.

Actually I've been diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder, but the more and more I read about Avoidant Personality Disorder the more and more I can relate to that.

That's because they often overlap eachother.
