SSRI's work well with depression.

I'm on lexapro for couple of months now. I did notice slight improvements - less anxiety (almost no panic attacks since) and somewhat better mood (i can be happy sometimes, but i'm still very sensitive to some things that can bring me down easily)

I was on Lexapro for 4+ years and it helped me deal with my anger outbursts, anxiety, depression, AvPD, etc. So, yeh, they work. Ask your GP for Lexapro though... ...

I wonder whether there is anything besides SSRIs or SNRIs that treat AvPD.

There is no doubt that MAOis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoamine_oxidase_inhibitors) are far more efficient than SSRIs, SNRIs and Tricyclic antidepressants.

The reason they prescribe mostly ssris nowadays is that MAOIs are potentially more dangerous (hypertension etc.)

I'm on Parnate for almost 3 months now and i like it very much.

been on different ssris for 2 years and you really can't compare them to parnate.

Of course antidepressants are no panaceas and you should always seek psychological help additionally.
